Why is the listed US to CAD price lower than what it is at checkout?

I purchased a buy now item with a listed US price with conversion to CAD yet when I got to checkout the conversion rate was $25 more. Why is that?

The converted price on the listing page is stated as an approximation.  It's based on currency exchange market rates which most of us don't have access to.  The amount you pay in loonies will vary depending on the payment method you choose.

Must have been a pretty pricey item for that much of a difference in the conversion calculation.

When the transaction appears in paypal if that is what is used a payment processor does it show the exchange rate? I believe it did at 1 time. It should in practice show at checkout.

@lotzofuniquegoodies - The PayPal exchange rate is shown at checkout. I was also given the option of having my credit card issuer do the currency conversion, for what it's worth.
