Is the tax collected on eBay sales submitted by eBay to the CRA or is it remitted to the seller?

If the seller is charging sales tax (HST) they require a GST # from CRA.  As a buyer on eBay I should be able to ask the seller to verify their GST # to make sure they are collecting tax legally and not pocketing the revenue. I have asked before and was provided that info. No response so far from this seller that I have made an offer to buy on an their listed item.

You as purchaser may request from Canadian sellers their GST registration number. The information is required to be available.

Collected GST is handled by the Canadian based seller (not eBay) and the seller deals with the government.

If purchasing through GSP (Global Shipping Program) there is no GST number. The tax portion is handled by Pitney-Bowes not the seller.
