Can I ship a coin from Canada to the US via lettermail, shipping via smallpackage costs more than the coin is worth.
Technically the answer you were given is correct. You are supposed to use international lettermail for any types of 'goods'. In reality, many sellers send small items such as coins via USA letter post. They pre buy their postage and use an outside mail box rather than give the envelope directly to a postal worker.
Domestically yes. Internationally, no.
The biggest problem is that lettermail cannot be tracked.
Domestically, you can add registration for $9.75 *, which can be tracked within Canada.
Registration is not reliabley tracked internationally, nor is it eligible for Signature Confirmation.
The other question is whether you are in a high fraud/high value category? When you do coin shows, is there a lot of shoptheft? Warnings about organized attacks? We occasionally attended coin and stamp shows in Montreal and those were the reasons we moved to doing stamp-only shows.
*Canada Post is so uninterested in promoting Registered Mail, that I was unable to find the current actual cost of the domestic service.
Registered Mail is still $9.75 + applicable postage for domestic service.
