Advice needed on refund

A customer purchases a pair of golf pants from me and pays immediately,about an hour later he email and says sorry I purchased the wrong size please refund,which is not a problem, but am I to understand when I refund him Ebay penalises me under this new defect rules Thanks for your help

There will not be a defect as it is a customer generated cancellation. When you do the cancellation, check off buyer changed mind/made mistake. Make sure you do the cancellation though as a refund by itself might give a defect.
