Hi comics-rock. Very nice Captain America Comics #1 from 1941. There has to be a story behind that one!

Not really, saw it and bought it. Don't get many oppertunities to own a comic like that. You've got an extensive collection though. Nice.

Paul.

there have been many times i've thought about picking up comics to sell, but there's just so many of them, and i wouldn't have a clue as far as what's valuable and what's not. i notice on ebay, some go for hundreds, while others for a buck don't sell. i guess you have to be real knowledgeable on them, and had to have been collecting for some time before knowing whats what?

The great thing about comics is that everyone has owned at least one! Just about every house have some stored away or can tell a story about their mother throwing them out.
Kat, You never know what you might find at one of your local garage sales. Some people have given away fortunes.
Rarity, age and quality are the main things that make comics collectable......which could be said for just about anything. Also books that have a first appearance of a popular character or have something of significance happen. New books tend not to carry much value unless they are a limited variant or are of high grade. They also seem to sell at their highest when they first come out. Professional grading has helped increase the price of comics and has added some stability in purchasing/selling these collectables. Sorry I'm starting to ramble.......
Hey Paul or anyone, what would you say is the most overvalued book out? I got to say Amazing Spider-Man #300! First full appearance of Venom from 1988. Has sold for as much as $1500 in a 9.8(near mint/mint graded by CGC), and not 20 years old yet.

Thanks Paul. I had a nice selection of silver/bronze age books, but sold them. I miss my Fantastic Four 48 and my Incredible Hulk 181 the most...... I did quite well selling them though and have been on the lookout for replacements ever since.

Hello buckingham303,

Thanks for starting this thread. I remembered a box of comic books I picked up several years ago and for the fun of it researched a few of them on eBay. A couple seem to be worth a little bit of change...1966 the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #40 SEPT (The END of the GREEN GOBLIN) and 1964 the TALES OF SUSPENSE (Introducing the gorgeous new menace of...the BLACK WIDOW #52 Apr. Both are by MARVEL and sold for 12 cents. I know nothing about comic books... are you a professional grader?

Hello Nora. Sorry I am not a professional grader or would even classify myself as an amateur one. Professional grading companies like CGC normally assign 3 people to grade a book and also check for possible restoration.
If you are interested, you could purchase an overstreet price guide which will tell you a little about grading and also assign a possible price to it.
The best I could do would be to make a guess if I was to see a pic of the front and back. It would make for interesting conversation though.
By the way those 2 books you mentioned are key issues and you probly have more..... Might be worth getting them graded! Use CGC as opposed to PGX.

Nora, it all depends on the grade. The two books you are talking about could be worth a couple of hundred dollars a piece. Like Andrew said, send him a scan and he'll give you a good idea on their worth. (The ASM your talking about could be worth upwards of $800, or as little as $10.)

Hey Paul. This months Wizard mag has an ASM 300 in a 9.8 valued at $1350 !!!!!! I was also talking with a CGC customer rep this week and we had a short chat about the particular book. For bumping purposes(this means to charge more based on value) they actually have the value of this book at exactly $800. Good call.
I'd like to get my hands on some $10 ones... in high grade of course!;-)

Comics Anyone? Want To Discuss Em?

Hello Andrew,

Thanks for the great advice. The entire box was purchased way back in the 70's. I'm surprised I hung on to them this long. I'll have to go through the box...the ones I mentioned where on the top.

I don't know how to post a picture on this thread (or if it is even allowed)...I'll have to read up on it.

Thanks again for starting this thread!
Nora

Andrew, I know. Prices are going crazy, but it's harder to get copies now. One thing, how do you post CGC comics? ie what do you use to package. I'm using dedicated CGC mailers but there costing a fortune...$3 a piece.

Thanks, Paul.

Hi Nora. Please keep in mind this is only my opinion. I believe the TOS 52 would grade out about a good(2) and the ASM 40 a little better at a good/very good(3). Worth about $30 for the TOS and $60 for the ASM. You may get more. Once again, only my opinion based on the cover.
Anybody else want to put a grade on these two.
Keep em coming Nora. Still curious about the rest of that box.

Paul, I pack each single book in a 38cmx28cmx5cm self locking box surrounded by 2 layers of large bubble wrap. I then pack styrofoam peanuts around the outside of the wraped book. I then tape everything tight. This packaging runs me about $3/book.
Not cheap! I pack better than I receive.
