Email Address/Username Question

Hello all,

Got a new one for ya! 🙂 Has eBay made some rule somewhere that says your email address cannot match your username? If so, can someone please send me a link to this announcement? There's nothing saying anything of the kind in the help files. I have a user who's email addy is bouncing and I sent her links trying to get her to update it and one to the rules showing it has to be valid, walked her through the instructions etc. No dice.

She responds that eBay is telling here there's a new rule that says email addresses can't match user ID's for security reasons and her old, invalid one matches her user ID even though the ISP has changed so she won't change it because eBay is forcing her to then change her user ID. Frankly, I think she's trying to reregister instead of simply changing her email addy but I thought I'd throw it out there. Has anybody heard of this supposed new rule?

I most certainly don't know everything there is to know out there but this sounds like a bunch of baloney to me. Anybody? TIA!!

Hmmm....learn something new everyday. I just got off the phone with eBay and there is such a rule. It's very poorly worded and the girl I spoke with said she's going to recommend changing the wording because it's not clear but it does exist.

She said they've noticed that the most successful account takeovers have been from user ID's matching email addresses so they've changed it so you can't do that. She said that most people only notice when they go to change it otherwise they don't. It makes sense but the wording is very poor.

It's the User ID policy and part of it says this - your user ID "Can't contain your email address or web address, or the word eBay". Well I'd take that to mean jakeeangel-ispcom or something like that not that your email address can't match your user ID.

I have had the same user ID for twelve years with the same email address which includes my first name and my eBay User ID (also my website!). 🙂

Elements that imply an email address or Web address (for example, xyz.com), including but not limited to .com, .ca, .net, .org, .edu, or any variation of such (for example, _com or -com). Your user ID can, however, contain an element of an email address or Web address (URL) that, when viewed outside the context of the email address or Web address, identifies you or your brand (for example, xyz).

ok now I'm confused...doesn't the second part of the above rule say the opposite of what ebay told Jakee?

Many users use their name as user ID and many have websites with similar name.

I suspect this may be a new rule by eBay for new users only.

No there's no part of an email address in her ID. If you use me as an example My ID is jakeeangel. I have a totally different email address. If I was to change it to jakeeangel@isp.com the site will not let me. It is a new rule apparently or, at least a new interpretation/enforcement of the rule.

Pierre, you have yours like that now. If you were to change ISP's and try to enter pierrelebel@newisp.com for your email address the system will prevent that change from going through. It will tell you to either get a different email address or change your user ID to not match your email address.

Don't know PJ. I know the wording isn't clear that's for sure! The girl I spoke to said that she knows the rule and how it's interpreted and enforced at their end. Email addresses cannot match user ID's.

I'd like to try to change my email address to jakeeangel@whatever.com to see what happens but don't want to mess up anything. I know my buyer is PO'd because she's been trying to deal with eBay on it for a few months, they won't budge. LOL go figure!

I just checked and my buyer registered in 2002. It's not just new users. It's going to be a slow changeover to phase out anyone who has their email addy the same as their user ID.

I wonder if the system is intelligent enough to pickup pierre-lebel@isp.com instead of pierrelebel@isp.com?
