So I just bought something off ebay. For $90 and checked my paypal for the purchase. and now I have this company that accesed my account without my permission and took an additional $30. Ebay is supposed to be a place to get items cheaper then you would in a store. Now i'm getting a used item for the same exact price I would for a brand new one. So now I'm clearly getting ripped off. because of an item that wasn't mentioned BEFORE I bought it. The item was supposed to be $90 that's what I agreed to pay. Not $120 I did not agree to pay that much. I also did not agree for a company to go into my paypal account and STEAL my money. I also can't cancel the purchase because it's already too late since it's been shipped out already. This is clearly theft and something should be done about it. I will be canceling my account on ebay after this because of this rip-off and theft.

Actually, you did.

Read the listing.  Read it again.  You see the price of the item, the shipping charge and the "import charge"

It is unfortunate you did not understand the charges at time of making the purchase but the information was there for you.

On the bright side, when the parcel gets delivered to you, you will not have to pay extra for taxes and Canada Post brokerage fee ($9.95).  The "import fees" you paid Pitney Bowes are more or less equivalent to the charges you would have paid Canada Post (including taxes and duty if applicable)

As Pierre said.  If you used a phone or tablet to buy, you may not have seen all the pertinent information.  The company is Pitney-Bowes, who run the Global Shipping Program (GSP) offered to US and UK sellers on eBay.  There are thousands of  posts on these Discussion Boards about the GSP, mostly complaints from Canadian buyers, but also good explanations about how it works and when it may be good to use.

Well - yes and no. In the past year I have bought at least 30 vintage radios on eBay from the US. Each was more than $50 and some were in the $200 range. I was only chaged once by Canada Post for $13.40.

The rest went through for nada.

None of them were purchase through the Gobal Shipping Ripoff.

You will find that  the Global Shipping Program adds 3 to 6 days to your shipping time.

This trainwreck of a program isn't going anywhere. Unfortunately! So Canadian buyers really need to do due diligence in order to avoid unintentionally bidding on/buying GSP items.

The GSP charges are not easy to see when using a cell phone to browse eBay. So precaution #1 would be to always use a computer when you want to actually purchase something from a US or UK seller. If you can't access a computer immediately, make a note of the listing and go back to it later when you can do so on a computer. It's a bit of a drag, but it may save you a lot of money and aggravation.

In the vast majority of cases, the GSP adds nothing of value for Canadian buyers. So the best thing to do is to treat it with all the contempt it deserves.

rosscd-- Your experience with postal shipping and border fees is interesting, since your radios, whatever their value would be the kind of heavy bulky item I would have thought would catch the eye of the customs officers.

Have you compared shipping costs for similar items sold with the GSP?
