Kat, not if you cancel their bid first. Remember, you have to cancel any and all bids before you end an auction or the high bidder when you close the auction is the legitimate winner.

Really? I never knew that.

I didn't think you could close an auction early that has a bid without canceling all the bids first.

You can end a listing early and accept the existing high bid if you want to. One of the first purchases I made on the site years ago was for a used digital camera. The seller stipulated in his listing that he would end his listing early if someone bid the price up to his reserve (this was before eBay rolled out BIN). When I bid to his reserve I dropped him an email and moments later he ended the auction leaving me as high bidder.

I've heard of many sellers that close their listings early because there is an error in the description or they have run out of inventory. Unfortunately for them, they neglect to cancel existing bids and wind up with buyers expecting to receive the item they have bid on. Its a quick way to get negs.

Monique, eBay used to require you to actually go to two separate pages - the first to cancel bids and the second to cancel the listing. I'm not 100% on this because it's been a while since I've had to cancel a listing but I seem to recall they might have rolled it into a single page thereby making it easier for sellers to avoid disaster by canceling an auction without canceling bids.

All of my listings are fixed price right now so I can't check. Maybe someone who has bids on an auction can check it out (without pulling the trigger, of course).

The last time I had to end an auction early, I was given the options to "end auction to the current highest bidder" or "end auction and cancel all bids". I did not have to cancel the bids prior to ending the auction.

thanks for the info bill, i did go and read on it (ending a listing early), but it didn't mention anything about the bidder...it did say you can cancel a bid and then end the listing, but it didn't say whether or not they're still bound to the transaction to leave a negetive...so i just wanted to be sure...

The simple answer is that if you cancel someone's bid, there is no longer any transaction. Therefore there can be no feedback. As someone who almost always automatically cancels bid from users with "0" feedback, I know this well.

Interesting, didn't know that either!

A couple of months ago I had to end a listing after the first day because someone pointed out a serious error in my description.

There was one bid on it (for 98 cents). It was no problem to just end the auction. If I recall correctly, there was some mention that this would cancel all bids (or was it that all bidders were going to be notified?).

i did cancel the bid first and then went and ended the listing and it asked me then if i needed bids to cancel...
...the kicker to this one though is the listing i ended early and the bidder's id that i cancelled is bidding on another one of my items 😮 if she's the winner, i hope she doesn't get mad over the other cancellation and leave a yucky feedback...

Kat, it is always a good idea to contact bidders to explain why you are canceling their bids for just that reason.
