Unable to pay for item - error code

Hello,

I used the "buy it now option for auction number 230913448913 and every time I click on "pay now",  from any page, I get the same error message right away -

Your request could not be processed at this time.

Error code:  70283

This has been going on for almost a week now. The seller and I have been trying to trouble shoot the issue but nothing seems to work. I took a look at ebay's suggestion but those only work if the seller uses paypal, which they don't, and if you're able to get to the first page beyond the "pay now" button, which I can't.

Please help! I just want to pay for my item and finish with it. Unfortunately, this is the only seller who has exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks,

J

Unable to pay for item - error code

The problem here is simple. You will need to pay your seller with your credit card directly.

Check the listing carefully.  PayPal is NOT offered in the listing:

Visa/MasterCard, Amex, Discover
Accepted
See your credit card issuer's terms

An alternative of course is for your seller to send you a PayPal invoice - from his PayPal page (not eBay) - if he accepts PayPal as a method of payment.

Unfortunately it isn't that simple. The seller has it set up so that it's supposed to redirect you to a checkout page when you click "pay now". They said they've encountered the issue before but it only seems to happen with international buyers (U.S. to Canada).

As mentioned before, the seller doesn't accept Paypal.

I purchased something from them 5 years ago and had no issue paying so I don't know what the problem is.

The only solution I can think of in the circumstances - since the problem is with the seller's checkout - is to have the seller call you and you give your credit card information over the phone.

I should also add, the seller tried sendering me the invoice. When I clicked the "pay now" option right from my email, I got the same error message. It's as if the payment button is a dead link.

Call me paranoid but I never give out CC info by phone or email, that's how you end up a victim of fraud. Thanks for trying to help though!

Since you already know the seller, I do not see any risk of fraud.  Folks use  their credit card information over the phone every day.  You are protected by your credit card issuer in case of non receipt.

The last alternative is to arrange payment by mail - bank or postal money order - if the seller is willing to accept a mail payment.

Yes, I used the seller many years ago and they have a good reputation on ebay but when I say I don't like giving my CC info out over the phone it's because I don't know what they may do with the piece of paper they wrote it down on; what are the odds they'll actually destroy it after. Like I said, I'd really prefer not to if it can be avoided.

I've asked them a few times if there's an alternative way to pay but they just keep sending me the same 2 generic messages. It'd be easier if they still accepted Paypal because this way, clearly, isn't going to work.

For reference, the following is what the seller has on their listing -

Payment Instructions:We are pleased to inform you that you can now pay directly with your credit online without having to send us any of your credit card information. It is quick and simple! Just click “pay for item” and you will be directed to a page to enter your credit card information and finalize your order. Once we receive your payment we will immediately ship your purchase and you will receive an email with your tracking information. If you have any questions please let us know.

I checked the listing and could not find the Payment Instructions as shown in your post.  What am I missing?

In any case, since the seller does not accept PayPal, and the automated checkout does not work to accept your credit card information online and you do not want to give your card information on the phone and mail payment is not acceptable, there is nothing you can do but find the item from another seller.

Possibly the seller will ignore the issue, or ask eBay to cancel the transaction or file a non-payment complaint with eBay.  If that is the case, you will be able to communicate to eBay at that time that you tried paying but his checkout system did not work.  That may be sufficient to avoid a non-payment strike.

Now, if I may suggest, in future, always check a seller's current feedback before purchasing.  Anyone looking at the 29 negative feedback would have quickly hit the back button instead of proceeeding with the purchase.

I know this is late and does no good for this transaction but for others future reference this issue is with credit card payments on eBay.ca only.  The easiest work around is to sign in to the american site (ebay.com) and pay from there.  Works every time.  I have tried to communicate with eBay about this problem but it falls on deaf ears. They claim it is a PayPal problem but it has nothing to do with PayPal, so I don't know if they will ever fix it. Been going on for at least a year or so.

Although eBay owns Paypal (and KJJ and part of CL and at one time owned Skype) the two companies operate independently.

Paypal has its own Resolution Centre and Customer Service. Since this is a PP problem not an eBay problem, it would make sense to ask PP for help in resolving it.
