I see an outbid notice on at least 4 items I have bid on...all refer to

a "private listing, bidders identity protected"..What is this ?

Some sellers make their listings 'private'.  When viewing the bid history, you see your own ebay ID but all others appear private, just as yours appears private to everyone else.  The following link explains about it:
