Refund policy setup preferences

Was back n forth-- with eBay support after a refund was requested.

In the end one of the support members suggested setting up a partial refund policy intsesd of a no refund policy

Does it matter much?

What's been your experience? Whats your policy?

Thanks

I'm not  sure what they meant by a partial refund policy.  At one time you could charge a restocking fee but that is no longer possible.

You can choose a no return policy or a xx days return policy.  If you choose to allow returns you can also choose that the buyer pay for return shipping or that you pay for return shipping,

BUT.....  your return policy applies ONLY for buyers remorse returns.  So if a buyer has changed their mind, found a cheaper item etc., your return policy comes into effect.  If the return is classified as buyers remorse, you don't have to refund the original shipping that the buyer paid.  The exception is if the item was advertised as 'free' shipping.

If the buyer requests a return because the item wasn't as described, wrong item was sent, item damaged, etc., then your return policy doesn't apply.  You can either accept the return, pay for the return shipping and then refund once the item has been returned OR you can refund without requiring a return.  Any return request that is considered an 'item not as described return' goes under the eBay money back guarantee so you need to be familiar with that.

I have 30 days return policy and buyer pays return shipping.  Haven't had any problems yet! Though I make sure to describe everything in detail if there's any flaws.  I would change it from no returns because that deters customers and it doesnt really mean anything because eBay will force you to refund and you wont get your item back.  At least with buyer pays return you can sit back and wait for the item.  Often a task that most buyers wouldnt bother going through.

I don't believe there is a "partial refund policy" but you can always (policy or not) give a partial refund.

I have several times given partial refunds because of buyers paying for multiple items individually (instead of asking for combined invoice) and I refunded the extra shipping charge. When you go to issue a refund it asks you the amount so you can put any amount in (lower than total charge) which would then be a partial refund.

At one point after Managed Payments started you would not get a refund on your fee portion of the refunded amount but I believe that was changed a couple of months back and now you do.

If a buyer has opened a return request, any refunds have to be done through that.  They can't be done through the 'choose refund amount' function that you are referring to.

I agree that a 30 day return policy/buyer pays shipping seems to work well.  But if the seller has a no return policy, ebay does not force a return if the reason is for 'buyers remorse'.  If it is a not as described return request, the seller still has the option of accepting the return and refunding after they get their item back even if they have a no return policy.  But if the seller doesn't provide a return label or the cost of one, ebay will force a refund without a return regardless of the sellers return policy.
