New Seller - needs your insights on Shipping to the USA

Hi E-Bayers,

I have some sunglasses that I'd like to sell to the US.

1. Since the selling price is over 100.00$ Canadian, would you get it signed upon delivery?  Do you also add insurance to the shipment in case it gets lost in the mail?

How do you usually proceed? Like, do you ask the buyer if they live in an apartment complex or in a house?

2. I listed these sunglasses to be shipped as a tracked packet to the US, (the buyer will be paying the shipping) because these items will obviously need a tracking code, is this how you would do it?

After calculating the price in the Canada Post Calculator, I noticed Small Packet US Air doesn't offer to track. The shipment including the box weighs less than 500 gr.

Tks for your responses,

There are some discounts available for sellers with Small Business Solutions cards, from Shippo, Paypal and SnapShip . Shippo is the company eBay will direct you to, but when I want a tracked label, Paypal is my choice.

1.  Neither is necessary. Use a tracked service and if your customer claims non-delivery, eBay and PP will back you if you have that number.

Actual loss in the mail is very very rare. Late delivery is more likely.

Insurance is totally unnecessary.  Your best insurance is your own packaging. Pack as if a 50lb package will drop on yours from a two foot height.  If you packaging will withstand that, you're good.

Also, Cookie Jar Insurance. Long story, do a Search on these Boards about that.

2. Not necessary. The address will have a unit number if they are in an apartment.

Actually, a lot of those "apartments" are post office boxes. This is a Good Thing!  PO boxes, and commercial mailboxes are the safest addresses available. The box holder either has a key or must sign for the contents.

If you are bored, use Google Maps to look up the address. No need to bother the customer.

Good. You already found the Canada Post website.

There is another, more expensive, tracked service. Scroll down further, and look for Tracked Packet USA.

I send a lot of my products without tracking, but that is partly based on my cost and partly on my customer base being very honest people who read and who follow instructions. Sunglasses?  I'd be more cautious-- and you have to use parcel rates anyway.
