Happens all the time. Only way around that is a reserve fee but you pay that even if it doesn't sell. See link attached regarding auctions. Let eBay help be your friend before rushing in feet first.  🙂

in a word, "YES"

If wanting to list items in auction format, it is best to use a start price that is acceptable to the seller, should there be only the one bid...

EBay's "brand" is that it is an auction house.

But for decades more than 85% of transactions have been Fixed Price.

EBay keeps up the facade of auctions by persuading naive newbies to list in that format.

EBay's advice is always good for eBay. It may not be good for you as a seller.

Second point.

Yes. If there is only one bid, you sell at that price. No exceptions.

Third point.

Yes buyers love Free Shipping. I use it almost exclusively myself.

But, no shipping is free.

If you use Free Shipping you have to look at how much you will pay for tracked or Air Mail shipping and include that in the asking price.

Fourth point.

Don't start to list until you have your Managed Payments account registered and approved.

EBay can't transfer your customer payments without your checking account information.

There is sooooo  soooooo much more.

EBay selling can be a fun hobby, or a real job, but it is important to learn what you are doing because losing money and goods is not fun.

Ask questions.

The usual busybodies experienced members will be happy to interfere give you advice form decades of experience.
