A Liberal Majority

A Liberal majority - you've got to be effing kidding.

I guess the people of Ontario like politicians that are the biggest crooks.

Squander a billion dollars for political gain - and they reward you.

Well, my guess is that we won't have to look at Hudak much longer.

Re: A Liberal Majority

Wow Pierre impressive. You must have upgraded house and appliances otherwise you're freezing your azz to save $$$. A smallish house? Are you serviced by Belleville Hydro? Do you now have solar panels?

One wonders had private enterprise not been introduced how much worse things could now be given governments do a good job of screwing things up with obscene beaurocracy. Private enterprise nuclear power still the cheapest and cleanest energy source and Liberals shut down Bruce reactors in lieu of wind turbines and solar.

Small?  Not quite: http://pierrelebel.com/pics/Family/House-Winter.JPG

We heat with natural gas.

And yes, we have replaced the freezer and the extra fridge downstairs for more energy efficient appliances.  And, like most people, we have replaced light bulbs for more energy efficient bulbs.

So, despite the 8% tax increase (from GST to HST) our hydro bill has been pretty consistent over the years.

How do you compare?

" Are you serviced by Belleville Hydro?"

Used to be.

However, as you may remember, Mike Harris forced small municipalities to sell their hydro and merge with larger ones.  We are now serviced by Veridian, partly owned (small minority) by the City of Belleville.

Re: A Liberal Majority

Veridian, no doubt lessens your cost. Private enterprise can do a better job and still make a profit. Just ask Kevin O'Leary.
Overall mine are about the same, London Hydro here. Profit credited to the tax base.

Re: A Liberal Majority

"Private enterprise can do a better job and still make a profit."

That is a theory.

How does it work in the real world?

Take a look at the long term profitability of CPP and compare the results to hundreds of mutual funds or other private pension plans in Canada.

Take a look at Ontario Liquor Board and its stores and compare their profitability to the private businesses you find in Alberta for example (the largest is Liquor Stores NA Ltd - public company listed on TSX - with about 200 stores in AB and a few in BC)

Etc... etc...

There is no guarantee that private enterprise will do better every time.  One would think that the "profit motive" would lead people to work harder to generate a profit but it does not always work that way.

Can the OPP be trusted ?

They are investigating the Liberal gas plant scandal.

But they endorsed the Liberal party and published many attack adds during the campaign.

The investigation should be handed over to the RCMP because the OPP have shown they are not impartial when it comes to politics.

Re: A Liberal Majority

The election is over.

69% of Ontario voters rejected the right-wing policies of Mike Harris and Tim Hudak.

That is NOT what Ontario wants.

It is done.  It is over.  No point crying over it.

Move on.

Next year, you will find the same 69% of Canadians rejecting the right-wing policies of Harper and his Reform associates.

Eventually, a true Progressive-Conservative party will regain power in Canada.  That will be a good day.  But not for a few years.  Too much damage has been done to the core values of this country by the Reformists.

Re: A Liberal Majority

The most recent polling averages (takes several polls into account) shows the federal Conservatives at 31%.

Once again, 69% of Canadians do not want the Conservatives in power and prefer other options.

Re: A Liberal Majority

This is a comparison of Hydro rates across major North American cities in 2013.

http://issuu.com/hydroquebec/docs/comp_2013_en?e=1151578/4165830

It shows that Quebec, Manitoba and B.C. have the lowest Hydro rates.

If I'm not mistaken, these are all Crown owned public Utilities.

PEI and Alberta have the highest.

I'm not sure which Provinces are private and which are still public but I did read an article that compared rates and matched them with public versus private. Most public Utilities were lower than private.

I can't speak of Ontario's subsidies for solar and wind power, but  I do think it's a good investment for the future. All newer technology costs more when it's first starting out.

And, somehow or other, Harper will get elected with a minority government because......................

My opinion is that what people tell the pollsters - and what they actually vote are different.

If you had listened to the polls, Wynne would have been lucky to get a minority win,

Instead, she gets a majority.  Go figure.

Big assumption that Harper will run.  I do not think so.  I expect he will pull a "Mulroney" and resign before facing the defeat of his government in the next federal election.

At Issue: Political Report Card

With Parliament breaking, Chantal, Andrew and Bruce weigh in on where the country is as summer 2014 approaches.

http://www.cbc.ca/player/News/TV%20Shows/The%20National/At%20Issue/ID/2466161991/

Somewhere in the podcast it is mentioned by Andrew that 69% was the way it was in 2011. No matter what the poll with opposition like Thomas and Justin plus a much improved economy it's Harper majority all over again. And he will still be the leader of the pack as it's too late now to bring in a new leader.

???

The election is sixteen months away.

Back in 1993,  Mulroney resigned early that year and the election took place in November.

It is not too late to get rid of Harper. Smiley Happy

Wasn't that a bit different? Mulroney's popularity barely registered and the Conservatives ended up being reduced to 2 seats? I don't think Harper will resign as long as there's hope. I'm sure they're preparing their election ads as we speak. Smiley Very Happy

Re: A Liberal Majority

All those fairy tale seats in QC will be up for grabs and will be a distraction for the Libs and the NDP as they fight over them. That makes it easier for Harper to concentrate on the rest of the country, should be an easy majority win.

The make-up of the next federal election will be a little different. The seats will go from 308 to 338, with Ontario getting an additional 21 seats.

Re: A Liberal Majority

Sorry, Ontario gets an additional 15 seats. They go from 106 seats to 121. Alberta gets 6 more ( from 28 to 34 ), B.C. get 6 more ( from 36 to 42 ) and Quebec gets another 3 ( from 75 to 78 ). The other provinces and territories stay the same.
