Question about something new I recently noticed in MY EBAY – SOLD

For an item I sold,  it shows shipping cost, then right below  it, “adjustment” (negative amount)

(Buyer purchased an item, paid for it;  then purchased another, paid for it.

Because I could ship the 2 items together, I refunded the shipping amount he paid... being the good and honest seller that I am  Smiley Happy)

Why has this “adjustment” info  started  showing? Just for informational purposes?

Or do I dare to hope that ebay may also refund my FVF for this refunded amount?

OR, another thought... please excuse my paranoia, with the spring update and all the confusing discussion about DEFECTS, could you provide some reassurance that these partial refunds are in no way going to count against us.

Hi Raphael -- I have a question concerning the new US TRS Plus requirements as they pertain to Canadian sellers (regarding tracking).

Will there be an extended grace period allowed Canadian sellers who already have US TRS+ until eBay has its validations procedures in place for tracking?  By "grace period", I'm not referring to the 2 month grace period currently permitted where sellers' ratings fall below par otherwise.  In other words, will tracking #s input during this gap period be counted toward the US TRS+ requirements?  I believe the word was that the Canadian tracking validation would be in place in August, but I imagine it could be even longer.

Thanks!

One other question today (and this is a bit of a prickly one).  Why was there no "heads up" given to Canadian sellers that HS codes were now going to be required when shipping?  At the very least, an informational announcement by eBay to sellers a couple of days prior, along with a link or two to the relevant sites, would have been extremely helpful.

I found it very disconcerting that sellers had to sort of hash out the details on the Discussion Boards and muddle through amongst themselves until they got some grasp of the requirements.  This seems to be a common method of introducing new requirements on eBay -- just letting sellers wake up one day to puzzle it out for ourselves.

Do you know why eBay Canada didn't alert us at least?

Hi Rose-dee.

Thanks for asking this question.

If for some reason we are not able to have validation of Canada Post tracking working the way we need it to prior to the change, we'll work on a solution with the Global Standards team to ensure we're accommodating Canadian sellers in one way or another.

Raphael, I guess I should ask -- when exactly do the new tracking requirements come into affect for Canadian sellers where US TRS+ is concerned?

From what you've said, it sounds as if the new requirements were intended to be implemented after the validation was available.  Yet my understanding was that the validation was not expected to be in place until August, 2014, whereas the new tracking requirement is effective sometime in April.  Could you clarify?  Thanks.

Hello bookelph,

I can only say for sure that up until now, partial refunds made after the transaction is over did not automatically put a credit adjustment against the FVF paid for the same item. I'm currently sourcing the answer to the question whether the new Adjustment treatment on the My eBay and Order Details pages will trigger such a credit (I'll post the answer here when I get it).

As for the impact of partial refunds on your defect rate, they should have no bearing at all since they are not transaction cancellations.

Hi rose-dee

These changes weren't something we were expecting. We try our best to warn sellers ahead of any changes we become aware of, as we have done in the past.

That would be a wonderful improvement, especially for those sellers amongst us who regularly give our buyers a post-sale break on shipping.  I've probably lost quite a few dollars in FVFs on many such discounts this year (which I provide as a courtesy to my customers).  Of course my buyers are unaware that no only am I "subsidizing" the shipping for them, but also losing money on the other end to eBay fees.  Eliminating the FVFs on refunded portions of shipping would certainly be a nod to sellers who give their customers great service!

Thanks. Even though they are only small amounts, better in my pocket than eBay's.

This situation does happen occasionally (even with combined shipping rules);

not sure why buyers pay after each purchase instead of using cart or asking for combined invoice, but they sometimes do.

I don't mean to belabour the point, but are you saying eBay Canada had no notice from either Canada Post or Paypal about the requirement for HS codes and the changes to the Paypal labelling system?

It was quite confusing and frustrating for sellers to be unable to print a label without first figuring out what an "HS code" was.  Many of us I'm sure had never encountered this before -- it was a pretty big change overnight!

The timeline is as follows:

April 16 - your seller dashboard will start showing you what your seller performance will look like under the new defect rate-based requirements. This is just a preview, and will show you what percentage of your tracking numbers uploaded could be validated by eBay.

August 20 - This is when you will start to be evaluated under the new requirements and when tracking numbers uploaded will start to be validated by eBay before they can count towards your 90% target under the US program.

For a reason that's still unknown to me, we did not get notified of this change via the same communications channels from which we usually get such information.

Thanks Raphael.  So if I lose my US TRS+ between these dates as a result of lack of validation, what can I do?

Many think that the US TRS+ designation is virtually meaningless for a Canadian seller, but I believe it gives my potential buyers confidence that they will get excellent products and service from me, even if I'm not an American.  And that (to me anyway) is, as they say, priceless.  The 20% discount is not my main concern.

But on April 20, we are evaluated for the previous 3 months so one could lose their U.S. TRS on August 20th? Is that correct?

Oh, sorry - perhaps I misunderstood this the first time I read it.  So, to be clear, the actual application of the new tracking requirements is not scheduled to start (and be counted for/against a seller) until August 20th?

P.S. -- I think this is basically the same question as 'pj's'.

I'm afraid I don't have a great answer for you regarding what to do if you were to lose your TRS Plus status as a result of unvalidated tracking. What Rodney said earlier is really the best I can offer:

With that said, just so we're clear, you don't risk losing any status on the US site as a result of tracking issues until August 20.

That is correct. There won't be no changes until August 20 but at that time, sellers will be evaluated on their last 3 months or last 12 months, depending on their sales volume.
