Beware PayPal shipping problems

Recently I discovered that PayPal shipping label program does not work properly with Google Chrome anymore. The label prints out postage stamp size and even worse they will bill you for it even though you clicked on CANCEL. The support staff were clueless when I called them on the 15th. The temporary fix is to use Internet Explorer to print your labels. If you used Google Chrome initially to print the label and it failed immediately cancel the label as you will still be billed for it.  Unfortunately you will have to wait about a month for a refund that is totally the fault of PayPal.

Beware PayPal shipping problems

It is possible this was the result of a recent problematic Java update, it is more likely to be a problem related to Chrome than Paypal.

Try Firefox.

eBay/PayPal use JavaScript on their sites and not Java. JavaScript is part of browsers. Java is a proprietary programming language developed by Sun Microsystems and has to be installed separately on a computer. Java may be needed by some web sites for specific applications but it is not required by eBay/PayPal.

Because of the similarity in names (Java and JavaScript) are often confused to be the same thing.

As for the PayPal printing problem, it is most likely caused by a new version of Google Chrome being installed automatically without the OP's knowledge. Google Chrome has a hidden update checking all the time for a newer version. It seem like several users are getting small PayPal labels recently when using Google Chrome.

Trying another browser like FireFox may avoid the issue. Eventually PayPal will fix their code to handle the newer Google Chrome or perhaps Google Chrome with update their browser if they are the problem.

I've used all 3 web bowsers mentioned and Chrome is by far the most bug-free and reliable. Solid as a rock. Going back to Explorer or Firefox is like trading in my SUV for a bicycle.  I wasn't aware of the automatic updates. That may explain the recent problems myself and other users have reported. What I still do not understand is why PayPal billed me for a label when I clicked on cancel once I saw the sample page was still a miniature. I still have to call them to get a refund on a previous label they said would be cancelled, but so far nothing has been done. Thanks for the input.

To get around the current problem with Google Chrome, install FireFox as a temporary workaround. Switch back when Chrome is fixed.

I am using FireFox. I have turned off automatic updates and have FF set to notify me of updates but not install them. I keep behind in updates by 3-4 weeks. Once I am confident that FireFox is okay, I update. This gives eBay/PayPal and FireFox time to fix any issues and work together.

I tried to use Google Chrome as my main browser but always had little glitches. GC updates often automatically and I never saw any option to control updates.

So I use FireFox and control updates hopefully minimizing issues (at least for the past 2 years).

Sometimes when I update FireFox, the page setup headers and footers are turned back on and margins are changed. So I have to check them when I manually update. Headers and footers need to be turned off and margins should be at 0.5 inches or less have shipping labels work best.

I used to be a devout Opera user.  I had no major issues with it as a browser.  You may want to give it a try, Portfelt.

Opera browser is not a supported browser by eBay.ca or ebay.com.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/account/browser.html

http://pages.ebay.ca/help/account/browser.html

Here's a list of browsers we support and where to get them.

Operating system           Recommended browsers

Windows   Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, or Google Chrome (latest versions)

Mac    Apple Safari or Mozilla Firefox (latest versions)

Browsers we don't support include: ....    Opera browser (all versions)  ...

There are enough issues with the supported browsers so why risk issues with an unsupported browser???

"Unsupported" doesn't mean "it won't work".

I've used Opera on a number of sites where Opera claims to be unsupported with no issues.

I am just informing forum readers that Opera is an unsupported browser by eBay.

The part about "risking issues" is editorializing, and as this post demonstrates, even "supported" browsers have issues.

Anyway, my point was that Porfelt seems to feel that going back to a browser (s)he's tried in the past is an unworkable solution, so if that's the case, why not try a completely new browser?

Because it is an unsupported browser by eBay. Why invest time and effort learning and using an unsupported browser by eBay?

It is more logical (for a seller in particular) to have have at least two of the eBay supported browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or FireFox for Windows, Safari and FireFox for Mac) because eventually eBay will make their supported browsers work for most reported issues to eBay.

I am not saying that Opera does or does not work with eBay. Opera is a modern browser that is compliant with current HTML standards and most past HTML standards. If Opera gains market share and a larger number of users, then it may be supported by eBay. But for now, using Opera as your main or alternative browser on eBay for selling in particular is not a good strategic move in my opinion. Use the supported browsers as your main and backup browsers.

PS I have Opera installed for a few months now and have been testing it. It works for almost everything I tried. It does have an issue with HTML tables in the listing description in some special situations. An interesting issue. Same issue happens with an iPad using Apple Safari browser (not using eBay mobile version of ebay).

There is no need to cancel the label. Just log into Paypal with another browser that works and go to your overview tab. Click the transaction details for the transaction and down near the bottom you should see a "Reprint label" link.

You have 24 hours to reprint the label.

I eventually got my refund from PayPal support. This representative was aware of the problem and even though the 24hr period had elapsed for me to claim a refund they were kind enough to re-imburse my account within 2 days. Normally a refund request is submitted to Canada Post and they take 3-4 weeks to process the refund. I have 2 browsers installed on my computer, so in the meantime will switch over to Explorer whenever I have to print my labels until the problem is resolved. I appreciate all the comments and help from the community. Many thanks to PayPal as well.

I have the same problem with Chrome displaying stamp-sized shipping labels. I actually have seen this problem almost 1 year ago and completely re-installed Chrome (as in deleted *everything* including browsing data). It solved the problem and I was happily printing normal sized shipping labels until the problem returned December 2013. Now it's January 2014 and the problem has not been fixed.

I still use Chrome because it has an auto-refresh extension, which keeps me logged in PayPal all day for invoicing etc.

I'm using Internet Explorer to print labels, but that means I have to log in every time I want to ship a label. Not just my user/password, but also my security key. And then I have to log in again (again with the security key) in Chrome once I've printed the label. It's very inconvenient.

Here's a WORKAROUND that doesn't suck!

1. Download the Chrome extension IETab.

2. Configure IETab to automatically activate Internet Explorer if https://*.paypal.com/* is accessed.

Now accessing PayPal and being able to print normal sized shipping labels in Chrome is completely transparent .

The Chrome extension Auto Refresh Plus also works to keep me logged in PayPal in IE mode. No special configuration needed.

I'm a happy camper now!
