It’s time to resolve Canada Post uncertainty

Did you guys get this?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear eBay Community Member,

eBay Canada is asking for your help to encourage Prime Minister Trudeau to take action to restore confidence in Canada’s postal service. If you agree that it’s time to end the labour uncertainty, please take a moment to sign a letter from eBay sellers to the Prime Minister.

For months, Canadian businesses like yours have had to deal with the implications of the ongoing negotiations between Canada Post Corporation and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. The time is right for the Prime Minister to initiate an alternative solution.

Your advocacy on this matter makes a difference—the Canadian government has made supporting small and medium business a top priority and your voice as a Canadian entrepreneur carries tremendous weight.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to sign the letter to the Prime Minister.

Andrea Stairs
Managing Director, eBay Canada

dutchman - it is OK to have a different opinion on this subject and express it.

Some Canadian sellers will agree to sign the petition prepared by eBay, while others will not.  Personally I will not.

I do not see it as pro or anti union or management since the subject of this thread is the "letter from eBay", not the labour dispute as such.

I do, however, agree that everyone is allowed to do as they feel best on this without having to feel they need to justify it to others. I fully support anyone else's decisions as being best for them.

From eBay's announcement:

"It is not clear if this limited job action will have any impact on normal service levels."

The total overtime across the country works out to about one hour and twenty minutes per employee per week on average (4% give or take a bit).

Since the "rotating strikes" will only affect one region (or province) at the time, I do not see any substantial delay in getting the mail delivered relatively on time (a day late here and there will not kill anyone),

It will if it results in defects on untraced lettermail.

a day late is a customer bonus if its service with a guarantee.  Collected a few cheques lately and hardly send anythiny that qualifies

I did get it and signed it immediately.

This uncertainty is driving me crazy... I currently have an offer on 2 items that I want to accept, but I can't until I know for sure if I can ship the order or not. $60 is not something I can afford to reject. Woman Frustrated

Just a start..... What next?

Well, no two people can agree on everything 100% of the time. Smiley Happy

I'm thrilled for all of us that it appears a settlement is on the horizon, and even happier that an American company didn't have to pressure our government, through what I considered an inappropriate means, into introducing "long-term" legislation to restrict free bargaining.  Essentially what eBay was engaged in was an attempt at intervention in our labour laws by a foreign corporation, using us as pawns.  I really did not like it.

Realistically, the actual disruption of services has been relatively minor.  I'm sure there are many of us who remember those awful strikes and/or lockouts a few decades ago that lasted months .  Mind you, those were the days when everything essential went through the mails, like rent/mortgage payments, bill payments, etc.

I'm still not opening my store again until I know there is a signed agreement.  The union remains in a position to strike, and CPC remains in a position to serve notice of a lockout should someone have last minute jitters. Nonetheless, I expect the union membership will want to see this resolved as much as we do -- mortgages to pay, kids going back to school, and such.

eBay was not the only group/organization  to forward  a specific request to the Prime Minister/Government.

This is evident from news reports....Many had the same idea  with respect to contacting the Prime Minister with concerns..  and a request for legislation

As eBay sellers we must  focus on the Review  of Canada Post and respond  as each of us chooses.
