Re: Ontario residents starting loading

I don't want to see variety stores selling booze, but a strike like this certainly will sway more people to that idea.

I am glad they are going on strike.

Just because it will open the doors to sell alcohol in the convenience and grocery stores.

Re: Ontario residents starting loading

You are entitled to your opinion, but I think that you are wrong on this.

Alcohol is sold by private businesses all over the world except for Ontario.

Are we the only ones who got it right?

Re: Ontario residents starting loading

Depends on the 'culture' of the people. In Canada's case.......yes we got it right. If you take all the pros and cons of selling booze in corner stores the cons far outweigh the pros. There is only one reason for booze to be sold at corner stores and that's convenience. But all the problems that will come with that aren't good.

Re: Ontario residents starting loading

Not everyone has problems with alcohol and it's not fair to the majority to restrict access because of the few who have issues with it.

Re: Ontario residents starting loading

It's a lot more than that.

But based on your hypocrisies everyone should be allowed to carry a gun, because a lot of people would not be a problem. The destruction in our society from alcohol is bad enough as it is, without making it even more accessible.

If booze is sold in corner stores, I can pretty much guarantee there will be more robberies, some fatal. Also more kids will be able to get booze because the store owners won't care as long as the ID looks legit and they can make moneyyyyyy. We're too closely associated with the USA and the alcohol mentality and all you have to do is Google 'liquor store robbery' to find page after page of the many there are.

I don't mind the liquor stores and the beer stores and if people can't plan what they need and the time to go and get it when they are open......then they need to organize their own lives first before asking everyone to change for them.

Re: Ontario residents starting loading

If we're so closely associated with the US then why aren't liquor and beer stores being robbed on a regular basis here?

After all they carry a lot more cash than a convenience store ever will.

There are reliable statistics that prove that variety stores are just as good as diligent at screening minors trying to buy tobacco than government employees are at minors buying alcohol.

Too much security and fewer of them. Put the sales of booze on just about every corner and it's a whole different kettle of fish. What's easier to rob.......a liquor store with 6 to 10 employees, or a variety store with 2?

If convenience stores start selling booze then the cash amounts will quadruple.

I'd like to see those stats, who made them and where they did their research.

To sell a drug and alcohol is a drug, at corner stores in my opinion is asking for trouble and for what?.........only convenience......just so someone can buy a bottle at 11 pm or only has to walk to the corner instead of driving a few blocks. It's not worth the long term costs.

Re: Ontario residents starting loading

Those stats have been posted many times here, but I cannot find them.

I remember one of the tv networks doing a sting on the LCBO and caught them selling alcohol several times to a 14 year old boy wearing a burhka.

Ok don't sell alcohol in the variety stores, but allow grocery stores to sell it.

They have lots of staff and carry a lot of cash and we don't hear about them being robbed.

I don't care how many people are working. It is very easy to rob a liquor or beer store with a gun.

Re: Ontario residents starting loading

Some variety stores in Ontario do sell alcohol it depends how far north you are.

BTW I am not worried.

A 20 minute drive puts me in downtown Detroit 😄

Re: Ontario residents starting loading

I really don't see the point in striking... I mean these jobs are mindless easy jobs what do they have to complain about..

Sure booze is a billion dollar business but to be an employee you need nothing but a resume..

I had 1 buddy work there for years and he loved it and never complained in fact he laughed about how easy his day was...

I honestly hope they hire scabs and leave the striking employess on the side lines holding a sign saying i want more but i am going to end up with less ...

The easier a job is the easier it is to replace the workers striking..

Not that I am against fighting for whats right but people who make good money make good money for a good reason ...

My body eventually wanted more so now he is an electrician at a mine making $60/hr and he didn't strike he got educated got an apprenticeship and bam making good money..

I never understood people who feel they make to little .. I made to little for many years but that was because i was uneducated and unwilling....

Re: Ontario residents starting loading

Well if you do, let me know. If the stats come from the Convenience Store Owners of Ontario, then I'd prefer a more unbiased source. Did a Google search of variety/liquor store robberies in the US not give you any information?

I remember one of the tv networks doing a sting on the LCBO and caught them selling alcohol several times to a 14 year old boy wearing a burhka.

It was a set up done by the garbage newspaper the Sun and run by David Menzies who is about as low as a snakes belly. He set the LCBO up in a one off situation and used an underage boy, without permission, to gain himself a moment of pathetic fame. You want to use that ONE incident as an example against the LCBO?

Ok don't sell alcohol in the variety stores, but allow grocery stores to sell it.

Yeah, I might not have a problem with that.

I am curious though............why do you seem so intent on destroying the LCBO.....putting a lot of people out of work and making a drug with a bad reputation more easily accessible? The selection of booze won't change and the prices won't go down.........what's the gain?

I don't care how many people are working. It is very easy to rob a liquor or beer store with a gun.

Then why is it virtually never done? Think about it.

Speaking of variety stores and their local neighborhood convenience .........this is what might be seen more and more in these stores if they are allowed to sell booze. At least in beer and liquor stores you have men to deal with the situation and you don't often have children in a liquor store, unlike convenience stores where they are buying candy or renting a movie and have to deal with drunks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtDMlOPsrRY

Re: Ontario residents starting loading

What do you think police stings are?

I don't like Menzies either but he did make a point.

I am more concerned about tobacco being available on almost every corner than alcohol.

Alcohol has medicinal value and it isn't fair to make it hard to get because a few have issues with it.

I would be happy if it was made available at the grocery stores.

The LCBO makes a profit because the are the distributor and because of the taxes.

Their retail stores pay huge overheads that warehouses don't have to deal with and make very little profit.
