Problems with a shipment to Chile

I need some advise on this one.

I sold an ipod to a bidder from Chile. I sent it through CP Small Parcel Air and he got it within 2 weeks. BUT the ipod is missing... the accessories and the ipod box were still in the package but not the ipod itself.

I know it sounds like a scam, but he has good FB and also left good FB for others. He contacted me right away and sent pictures and very detailed information on package condition etc. He even called me and was very friendly and wanted to know how we will deal with this and that this was a gift for his wife, I was even able to talk to her too. They both seem very nice people. He also sent me a copy of an email he sent to the Post in Chile. So I don't really think that he is a scammer.

Could it be, that the package has been opened, the ipod removed and closed again?

Did anybody ever had something removed or stolen from a parcel?

How do I deal with this?

Could have been stolen by a postie, could have been opened by Customs and improperly resealed, could have been stolen once delivered (stolen off the porch, so to speak) - all sorts of possibilities.

File the insurance claim with Canada Post if you shipped Small packets or if you had insurance and refund the guy - you have zero chance of winning a Paypal claim on this, so might as well lose graciously.
