Do you know how the proxy bidding works on eBay (and most other online auction sites)?
Take a look at:
http://pages.ebay.ca/help/buy/automatic-bidding.html
Only the bidder sees the actual amount bid.
Sellers and other viewers see the starting bid if only one bid was placed (regardless of the actual amount) and the starting bid will be shown.
for example: starting bid $0.99, bidder bids $50.00, $0.99 is the only amount seen by seller and viewers until a second bid comes along
or
one increment above second highest bid.
for example: starting bid $0.99, first bidder bids $50.00, second bidder bids $100.00, only $51.00 ($50.00 plus $1.00 increment) will be seen by the seller and other viewers
For more details about increments:
http://pages.ebay.ca/help/buy/bid-increments.html
If you know of a specific example where the system fails (I have never seen any in 15 years on eBay), please state the listing number.
