Nope dipmicro - you got it wrong. PayPal is neither a bank or trust company and certainly not a financial institution. Nor are exchange services in Canada guided by the Ministry of Finance as you suggest. Banks are free to charge what they want and are only guided by market pressures and public outcry. They are not regulated. Do you watch the news? Do you recall even a couple of months back when Canada's Finance minister contacted the banks and "asked" them to reconsider their high service charges? He did not tell them to reconsider - he asked them.

All companies are well within their rights to charge a reasonable amount for services. PayPal charges are well within what might be considered reasonable even if many Canadian sellers disagree. It is higher than banks but is actually quite close to what Canada Post charges.

Perhaps the Ministry of Finance will come down on Canada Post as well. ;-)

treasure-pot, you must have read something between my lines I did not write. I am not qualified for giving advices regarding legality of financial transactions nor deciding if PayPal is a bank, trust company or fishing outlet, but I only adviced someone who has that competency.

Most financial transactions are regulated in some way if it be a bank or trust company and the voices saying "PayPal can do anything market allows" are wrong.

Are these not your words in post 15? How have I misinterpreted them?

Not a case of winning, dipmacro - just wondered how you had determined that everyone else was wrong.

Even to meet the absolute lowest standard for a Powerseller, you have to have $12,000 in annual sales. At the absolute minimum, you are giving PayPal an additional .5 cents on every dollar to have them convert the money for you, which is at least $60 per year. If you also incur expenses in US dollars, and convert your money to Canadian dollars first, then you are giving another 5% of every dollar you spend in US dollars to your bank.

It's 2.5 points not 5 (actually I think PayPal are at 2.3%), even for large amounts exchanged via someone like xe.com there will be a spread of 3/4 of a basis point.

What I was referring to was having US dollars, then transferring to a Canadian bank account, incurring the 2.3% premium. And after that, purchasing inventory, or what ever expense, and incurring it in US dollars, so thereby taking your Canadian dollars and converting back, so incurring 2.3% again.

My point is, if your revenue is in US dollars, and you incur expenses in US dollars, keep your money in US dollars, instead of going from US to Canadian to US. That is where I came up with the approximate number of 5%, though more accurately it may be closer to 4.8%.

Just as an aside for anyone who believes that PayPal is, or should be, governed by banking laws, there are several states in the US that are looking into banning PayPal because of their immunity from banking laws while they are acting as a bank and performing many banking activities. That's one reason I resisted accepting PayPal for many years -- I've very rarely experienced a problem with cheques or money orders.

Bill, may I join you and Monique -- my stipple of choice is red wine and I'm enjoying one right now! Cheers!!!

Glenda....if you're "stippling" with red wine, try not to spill any on your postcards.......I hear it's a major challenge to eradicate wine stains from card stock. Obviously if you're "stippling", it's OK to get it on your walls....or on the old guy. 😉 >>>>> M

Mike - the old guy is stippled enough and I don't think our landlord would like new stippling on the walls!!!

Bill, I've had 3 and yes, I think those are stipples on golf balls (or maybe not - (where's our old buddy the golf pro when we need him???)

How do you manage to keep your opinions under control when you read some of the posts on here? I'm having a real problem not hitting the "send" button after I've composed a really pithy response to some posts (no names mentioned!)

By the way Monique, in case you were wondering, I got bumped by that provincial minister talking about the Caledonia difficulties. Supposedly I'm on track for this weekend.
