Wrong address Info provided by Paypal

I received an email from one of my buyers saying that "my order got shipped to some address I have no idea how that worked..I checked my address today & it is now not the same."

This was a sale within Canada. I shipped to the address on my notification from Paypal. I do note that the name on the address & the info that shows on the buyer on eBay is a different name but that often happens. The order details are the same as what was provided by Paypal.  It was mailed via Expedited Mail so there is tracking. When I checked the tracking it shows "recipient not located at address provided. Item being returned to sender." This was on Feb 3 so I of course do not have it back yet.

Shipping was fairly pricey on this ($19.19) for a $12.99 item. I am wondering now what the procedure is. I have not yet responded to the buyer so not sure what he wants to do but I do know that I do not want to pay for shipping to a different address. What are my obligations as a seller here. Anyone have any experience along these lines.

Not your responsibility.

It's up to the buyer to make sure that his addresses are correct. Including that his eBay and PP addresses match.

Since the purchase was Undeliverable, you don'thave to think about refund until it is returned and in your hands.

And eBay doesn't insist on refunds for Undeliverable shipments.

Politely encourage your buyer to correct his addresses.

Tell him you will cancel the order when you have the item back and will refund at that time.

You can decide how much that refund will be-- personally I would not refund your shipping costs.

Thanks. I will not refund the shipping cost unless eBay insist upon it for some unknown reason. And if he wants it shipped somewhere else he will need to pay a further shipping cost to me. Otherwise I will lose money on the deal which if it was my fault I would suck up but it was not.

When you look at the order details on ebay and the info on Paypal, the addresses should be identical...are they?  Is that the address that you sent to?   If so, then perhaps the buyer used an old address?

When a buyer pays, whichever address they choose on ebay is the one that you will see on both ebay and Paypal and that's the one that the seller ships to.

Assuming that the buyer chose the wrong address, you can hold back the original shipping cost but you would have to refund through PP.  If you do a cancellation through ebay then the whole amount will be refunded.

There have been times in the past when there were glitches, so if your customer insists the information was not changed by them, they can reach out to eBay or PayPal.

However, one thing to note is that I have run into this issue before where the address is different in the eBay Invoice than the PayPal notification. If that was the case, you will want to seek clarification from eBay as I'm not sure what address eBay looks for when dealing with MBG.

as long as paypal is the provider of payment, i always ship with the address they provide, there are many users who don't update their ebay addresses, and ebay doesn't pull that info down, to update..  As long as you ship to the address provided by paypal you are protected by paypal

How many people are listed on ebay and been there for 20 years, but don't think to update their address's  ,, there are tons of them,, shipping info is provided , being the newest first, from the payment provider..   so anyone who tells you they are the same is wrong...

The ebay invoice is sent before payment so the buyers default address will show there.  But you should always use the address showing after payment.
When the buyer is checking out on eBay, they choose the address that they want to use and whichever address they choose will automatically go to PayPal That means that after payment the address in both PP and eBay will always be the same regardless of whether it is their eBay address, PP address or their mother’s address.

They may not be the same before payment but the address they use when they checkout on eBay will automatically go to PayPal.  If they use a 20 year old eBay address that is the address that PayPal will show too.

The addresses could be different at one time but that changed about 10 years ago.
