Why such crazy high prices?

Why do some sellers list items with a crazy high price, like a $50 DVD set for $900? There must be some reason they do this, as 'best offer' is not an option and they seem to successful. Are they somehow avoiding the rules?

I have seen junk listed in the millions!

I'm really curious .... thanks.

And, the listing says he has sold 79 of these, and this is the last one. Checking the title under the 'sold' category for several months back, none have come close to the listed price (highest one is about 1/10 of listed), and none have been sold by this seller!

Bizzare?

My guess would be they're out of stock and waiting for more inventory to come in. They probably want to keep the listing active rather than start over when more arrives.

I agree.

This has always struck me as a deeply stupid strategy, since buyers like the OP find the high price ridiculous and not only don't buy, but if there were a Blocked Sellers List*, would put that seller on it.

It also makes eBay look bad, either indicating high priced/low value listings or insane sellers.

IMO, it could be a bait for people to look at the seller's other listings.

I've noticed quite a few like these in my area of business (vintage electronics). They just leave the item there, e.g. a vintage watch, listed at an exorbitant price, which of course never sells.

On the other hand, I've noticed that now people want a super bargain for such items, when listed at lower prices, even if rare and/or collectible. I've found myself with people offering to buy at 75-80% discount. It's like a race to the bottom.
