Comics Anyone? Want To Discuss Em?

Anyone interested in talking comics? Trends in the market.... Conventions.... Grades.... Third party grading companies.... Individual books from all ages....

I'm interested to hear from others with similar interests, so don't be shy!

j-epp, that happens in any line of collectibles. What my husband and I usually do is tell the people that we suspect there may be value in their items, make them an offer, and also offer to split 50/50 anything over x number of dollars (usually about double what we paid them).

They usually have no idea how to go about finding out the value or who to sell it to, so they usually take us up on the offer - we have a clear conscience and the owner realizes much more than they expected. The added bonus is that they recommend us to their friends as being very honest dealers!

I would have to tell the seller as well....which is why I'm not good at garage sales! My mouth insures that I never get the best deal....but I do have a clean concience.

I must admit feeling a little bad about bagging this one last night. But this was from a seasoned ebayer. Only 2000 made from 1995, item # 260129690258 .

I would be more into "A Date with Judy" comic books!! (I wonder why?)

But I do have a whole box of comic books that my son had back in the eighties. In fact I think I have some that may have been around when I was a kid. No comments on how long ago that was!! I will have to check them out.

yes, sometimes i do feel guilty. if it were me with the comics, i would have got my profit, and returned half to the elder man. after all, i did buy them from him fair and square. and there's some that would argue its up to them to do their researh, although i know some elderly just don't know how, or begin to even know that their items have worth.
i do believe that was an excellent lesson to teach a young buck growing up though.

...that being said, i would be surprised if the elder didn't share some of his profit with the young chap who returned it? now THAT would have been bad!

50%! i tell the person exactly what they have and offer 50% of guide value. they usually sell staight away and if they get greedy and take the collection to a comic shop because they now know what its worth, they'll get offered 10% by the comic shop. they always come back, but i tell them at the time its a one time offer, and ill never look at a collection a second time. im not driving as far north as perry sound to grade a collection for free (and Ive done it!!!) to only drive back up there a week later cos they now realize i made a really good offer. the problem is, more and more people are getting hold of the overstreet guide value and grading the comic themselves. when they see the values of some of the comics the comic start to look in a lot better condition to them than it actually is. people are then suspicious when you tell them the comic they think is worth $2000 is actually worth $200. paul

Sales have been much slower than usual the last month or so. I'm selling very little out of my store and have been getting hardly any offers.... even the foolish ones. I've found that I have had to list a lot more items in auction format and take a smaller profit just to make a few sales. I have 35 items closing today with bids on only 1 so far. Lots of watchers. If I sell 10, I will be lucky.
On the other hand, it is a great time to buy...
Hey Paul, Hate to see you lose your PS status.
Anybody want to buy a comic?:-D

I was close.... Sold 11 and 2 more from my store. Not great, but not to bad. Had 5 or 6 that normally sell everytime I put them up, but not today. The watchers kept watching.....So the seller keeps selling! Time to re-list baby!
Sure you don't want to buy a comic.... Sorry, a collectable?;-)

Anybody got any info about the comic book expo August 24-26 in Toronto. Whereabouts is the Toronto Convention Centre?
I may pass on Chicago and go to this one in stead. Bring the Family along to and go to Canada's Wonderland. Very busy there I guess?

Don't know anything about the expo but it does sound interesting. We scored a few hundred comics from Goodwill. Some pretty gory, graphic, X rated ones too. Death, grave robbing, necrophelia, all kinds of um, bizarre stuff to say the least including a Cherry. It's a porno comic.

I had a huge laugh over those. The lady bidding against us on them was PO'd because we were *gasp* DEALERS!! and she wanted to give them to the local kids. All we were going to do was sell them for a profit. HMPH ROFLMAO!! I'd have loved to see the faces of the various moms and dads as she handed little Johnny a porno movie in comic form. 😮 Or how about the guy digging up gramma's grave and doing the nasty with her. LOL OMG to say the least!! LOL

These are SO not child appropriate it's unreal!! Goodwill, according to their policies, isn't even supposed to have accepted them due to graphic nature etc. Clearly somebody messed up. 😉

Here's a link to the Convention Centre.

Haven't been to Wonderland in years. I would imagine it'd be very busy yes. Wonderland is at least a 30 minute or more drive from downtown Toronto depending on traffic could be 45 minutes.

Funny story. Good thing you ended up with them.... I think!;-) Generally when you use the word "comic", people assume they are meant for kids. Not so, hey?
Thanks alot for the info on the convention centre.

Comics Anyone? Want To Discuss Em?

Hello Andrew,

I put the comic books back in the box and tucked them away. I still have to visit a comic book shop to pick up the backing boards you mentioned, hopefully they will improve the condition.

I thought of you at an estate sale I recently went to. There were 3 large boxes of comic books...asking price was 25 cents each. They appeared to be fairly recent and in near mint condition. I didn't purchase them...I don't know enough about them or how to rate them to sell on eBay.

You have been a big help Andrew...THANK YOU!

Nora

A couple of weeks ago we got in a large comic collection from a private collector. Some really nice stuff, including Batman and Wolverine runs.

We're selling the collection in smaller lots of related titles and related themes and that seems to be working out well so far. However, there are quite a number of independent titles that, based on our research on eBay, seems won't sell even if we do put it up as a lot at a low price. (Like Mai, the Psychic Girl). There are also some Marvel and DC titles that probably won't sell on eBay (aka Star Trek). Can anyone recommend the best way to sell the remaining books after selling the more popular titles on eBay?

Much appreciated,

Ernie

Hi Ernie. I can't think of any better venue to get the best bang for your buck than ebay.... That being said, you can try your local comic book store, which unfortunately might only offer pennies for some of your items.
Your Star Trek books should be in some demand especially if they are the first runs from Marvel, DC and especially Gold Key(whitman).
Sorry I can't be of any more help. Maybe others have better ideas.

I will be attending the Fan Expo (Comic book Convention) in Toronto this coming weekend. Apparently it is the 3rd largest of its kind in the world. I'm preparing to be overwhelmed!
Anyone else planning to attend?
