How do I tell if a fur coat listed is a fake?

Re: Fake Fur

I think that most sellers are honest about what they are selling but there is no way to guarantee that the item is what they say it is. Before you buy anything like that you should be checking the sellers feedback and see what sort of comments they are getting from buyers that have purchased similar items. Keep in mind that if you buy something from overseas and it is not what you thought it would be, it will be very expensive to return it to the seller with delivery confirmation.

Re: Fake Fur

If it's not clearly stated in the description of the item, have you contacted the seller to ask?  I find it odd to begin with that any seller of such a garment wouldn't include this important and fundamental information in the listing.

Nonetheless, an honest seller should be more than happy to answer such a question.  Look for the "Contact Seller" link at the very bottom left of the listing, and choose "Other" when the options appear.  While you're at it (if the seller hasn't put up a picture of the label from the inside of the coat), ask the seller to take a picture of the label and either send it to you or include it in the photo gallery for the listing.

All garments made after about 1960 were required to have a fibre content label.  Fake fur will usually be made of some form of Acrylic or a blend of Acrylic and other fibres -- the fabric content label should indicate this if the coat was made in the last 50 years.  If the fur is the real thing, the coat should have a furrier's label instead, however after the mid-1960's a lot of very good fake furs were made by top furrier companies, and were often hard to tell from the real thing at any distance.  So a good quality fake fur should have a furrier's (or manufacturer's) label and a content label.  A true fur will often have only a furrier's/manufacturer's label.

If the seller says there isn't a fabric content label, I'd move on, unless the garment is an antique.  Fake fur did not exist on the retail market prior to the early 1950's, so a fur coat from before the 1950's will almost certainly be real fur.  The trouble is that some manufacturers used to pass off died rabbit as beaver or other costly fur.

At any rate, if the seller doesn't seem happy to answer your questions about the quality and content of the coat, I'd find another coat.

Re: Fake Fur

By the way, if you can provide me with the item number here, I may be able to help just by looking at it.

Re: Fake Fur

It could be clearly stated in the description but still not be accurate. The seller could be wrong or dishonest. There are many 'authentic' items on ebay that are not authentic.

Well, that's true, but a buyer's best bet is still to purchase from a seller with a proven reputation who has stated the relevant details in the listing and has photos to back up the description.  That -- and eBay's claims system, if you have trust in it -- is about all the assurance one can expect for an online purchase.

A seller who neglects to include an important detail (you might even say a "deal maker or breaker" sort of detail) is one I'd be a bit suspicious about from the start.  Deliberate omission or not, it wouldn't give me a lot of confidence in the seller or the item.

Re: Fake Fur

It's also a foolish move.

I prefer real fur to fake, it is lighter, easier on the environment, and lasts longer in attractive condition, but there are also many who think "But not a real fur coat, that's cruel".

A person who thinks she is getting a fake fur is just as likely to be angry at getting a real fur as someone who wanted mink and got plush.
