I apparently won a bid but seller sent a message that he'd sold the item to someone else in person & wanted to cancel the contract.

nothing you can do just accept the cancellation.

Decline the cancellation by selecting the decline option. The seller should have ended the ebay listing before selling the item elsewhere.
