If mainstream entertainment were $7.99 all you can eat, it would severely impact Hollywood new production market value and they will not allow it.
The death of the local video store ? Not likely. Public libraries were free in Canada for how long and how did it impact Block-Buster ?

Lots of rental competition in my area, Blockbuster, Two Asian stores, & a Shell service station.
Although the latter do not have the selection of Blockbuster, who can argue with 99 cent rentals , including New Releases, Monday To Thursday, & 2.99 on Weekends.
Time to rent Zombieland again.

no more money grap, fine prints, contracts, negative billing, etc. from Rogers Cable who raised their basic price from $15 to $31 and give you 10 % off and called it a deal.
Greedy corporation who's not satisfied with $50 for life, i have had enough!
More freedom and choice for all 🙂

i quit my cable addict just last month, after 25 years!

Congratulation, good choice. Raising price from $15 to $31 over 25 years is not so bad - it's approx 2.8% per year. The wages in Canada have been rising with time as well - minimum wage from $2.71 in 1976 to approx $10 today.
Lot's of tasks that were done manually 25 years ago are automated today - e.g. billing, remote cable modem diagnostic up to those annoying automated customer support lines (don't you just love the "sorry, I did not get that" when talking to the machine over the phone?).
Anyway, I agree, telecom companies in Canada appear extremely greedy due to lack of competition. Cogeco is about the same. They have been pushing their overpriced internet phone for so long ... I always just tell them I use Skype for 1/10th of their "deal". The entertainment value of the programming on basic channels is low with more ads these days than programming itself, news are free on the net and sport channels are premium anyway, so we may hope the Netflicks will push cable operators to decrease their basic cable pricing in Canada.

Unfortunately, so far it has only encouraged them to reduce customer's bandwidth limit in an attempt to discourage downloading from companies like Netflix.
