Spell Check on Windows 8 And IE9

Last June I got hit by a virus so decided to upgrade my computer. Previously, when I typed a document or e-mail the mis-spelled word would be underlined in red. If you put your cursor over the word the choices came up. Now it is underlined in red and when spell check is hit, the red line disappears. If you run your cursor over the mis-spelled word it turns red and offers the choices. Is there any way to go back to the old system or is this so called progress? I have tried for several days to find a solution but to no avail.

I have purchaed a new tower in the last six weeks & have noticed the same in relation to spell check.

I guess this is all new & not what we were used to in the past.
