Try calling Customer Service. I had an item sold, 28 days later the buyer opened a return stating the item was broken when it arrived.
I questioned the fact that he did not contact me right away, as this was an expensive item and not easily breakable.
eBay actually sided with me, agreeing that it was a red flag that he did not contact me immediately. Doesn't hurt to try.
Personally, I think HE broke it and then wanted his money back.
