How do I know if eBay has opened a case for me?

I am having a dispute with a seller on a returned item. Every time I click the "Open Case" button on the item page, I get a box to give the reason for my dispute. I fill out the details and click the "Ask us to step in and help" button and it just...returns me to the page where I can open a case, with no confirmation that a case has been opened. I requested a case be opened days ago, within the window of time allowed, and have yet to receive a response. Is this normal? How do I know eBay is investigating?

How do I know if eBay has opened a case for me?

Phone Help and Contact (they are actually pretty good about the callbacks) and ask them if they can see an open case.
