Seller refuses to complete transaction, also refuses to cancel, and won't respond

A first for everything.  20 year ebay member here and this has never happened. 

 

Seller had a standard auction that ran to conclusion. Forty-some bids. I was successful.

 

The final price was a couple of hundred dollars under market (a camera system) and he refused to complete the transaction. He told me not to pay (I have his note in my messages), so I did not.

 

I was annoyed, but that's life. Some people are honest, some are not. The challenge I have now is that the seller won't cancel the transaction -- he won't respond to me at all. And the item is sitting in my cart and I am getting pinged by eBay for payment.

 

The system won't let me cancel because the auction ended and I have committed to buy. I can't even open a dispute - the system keeps coming back to "pay first." I'm not about to send money, of course.

 

What should I do? Just let it sit in my cart? Will it ever disappear? Will eBay ever help?

I think you may just have to phone Customer Service about this. They can look at the messages sent by you & the seller.  Very likely the seller will get a defect if he backs out for no reason.
