Sketchy Refund?

Hi,

I bought two items from one listing (2 different color variants of the same item) back in August. The seller had listed the items (rings) as being S925 silver. I received them and they're absolutely not silver -- possibly silver-plated, but I doubt that also.  A jeweler agreed. The items also definitely don't match the listing photos. They're like the quality of a gumball machine ring and the details don't match.

Anyway, I initiated a return. The seller DMed me and said they'd refund and that I don't have to return the items. They did indeed refund me. They also asked me not to close the return ticket and to let it time out. Today, I got this message: "The seller asked us to review this case and make a final decision."

One of two tickets closed with the message, "
We're sorry you had a problem with your purchase. However, to receive a refund, buyers need to return the item within the required timeframe after the seller has accepted a return request. This item wasn't returned to the seller on time. After reviewing all the details of this case, we determined that you won't receive a refund."

Can the seller somehow get the money back from me as a result of this? I have the DMs where they said more than once that I didn't need to send the items back. (Seller was based out of China and could not use the eBay return label system, apparently. They asked me if I could pay to send the items back and they'd refund the shipping cost, but then backed down on that when I agreed, and told me a return wasn't necessary.)

In literally 20 years of eBay use, I've never had to seek a refund. Is this normal/okay?

EDIT: Forgot to mention I paid $40USD+ for each ring, so it was not unreasonable to expect they'd actually be silver.

How was the refund paid to you?
If it was an etransfer, it cannot be recalled , which is why etransfers* should not be used for online purchases.

If it was a Paypal payment, the seller could open a Claim with PP, but I am not sure how that works these days since PP has changed a lot of its policies since I was using it regularly.

They refunded me via PayPal, as that was how I paid. As of just now, both the return tickets have closed (as I didn't ship the items back, as agreed), but the money is still in my PayPal account. I'm just worried they're somehow going to turn this on me and get the money back.

TBH, I wouldn't be surprised if the money is taken from your account. If eBay and PayPal are not related anymore, how are they going to prevent PP from siding with the seller? They may say: "The buyer did not return the item, as per normal procedure in these cases, then the buyer is not entitled to a refund".
