Protection from INR for Local Pickup

Sold an item on Ebay.com, so no Canadian local pickup option.  The person lives near by and I would like to drop it off to them.   My only concern is that it is a zero feedback buyer, and if I hand it over in person there is no tracking to prove delivery.   Christmas purchase of a nice Lego set, I guess they did not get what they wanted!  I am going right by there and can save them $15US is shipping.

Is there a way to get proof of delivery in this circumstance that is valid for Ebay?

There is a system that uses QR codes for pickup/cash on delivery transactions.

I've seen it referred to, but I have never had any reason to look into it.

Is the customer's $15 saving worth your nervous reaction?

This eBay help page refers to the QR code scan that @femmefan1946 mentions:

https://www.ebay.ca/help/selling/posting-items/setting-postage-options/local-pickup?id=4181

A quick scan of the page suggests to me that it would only work if you offered local pickup in the listing, so I'd answer your question with a qualified "no".

If they want local pickup, your best option would be to arrange to cancel the transaction and re-list it with local pickup enabled for them. That way you can do it by the book and scan the QR code.

If you didn't have local pickup enabled, and if they didn't specifically ask for it, I would just pay the $10-$15 bucks and ship the item. I get you are being thoughtful and trying to help them get their item sooner, but it isn't worth the potential issues that can come with there being no acceptable (by eBay standards) proof of delivery.

I also think there is an element of boundaries to it. I don't think everybody would find it acceptable socially to drop off an item to someone else who is local, without at least asking if they are fine with it first. Obviously, you are being thoughtful and not doing anything nefarious, but some people won't see it that way or just wouldn't be comfortable with it.

Unless they have specifically asked, and they really want it ASAP, I would ship it.

@byto253

According to dot com the QR code is ONLY available with the app. Not the desktop version. It includes the QR code along with a 6 digit number.

Can you confirm if the pick up option can be added to a Canadian sellers listing created on dot com please? Or would the seller need to cancel the listing and re-create on dot ca? It would be most helpful for the many that only use a PC to generate QR codes for pickups and just have the customer scan.

How to arrange a local pickup

After making your purchase, contact the seller to arrange a time and place to collect your item, and agree on how you’ll pay for it.

The seller will let you know which payment methods they accept. In addition to PayPal or credit card, you can sometimes pay for local pickup items by internet banking, check, or money order—either beforehand or when you pick up your item. Sellers may also accept cash for local pickup purchases.

After you’ve completed your purchase, we’ll send an email with a Local Pickup code (a QR code and a 6 digit code) to your Messages. You can either print off your email or show the seller the message on the app when you collect your item. The seller will scan or enter the code on the eBay app to confirm you’ve picked up your item.

Thanks for the input everyone.  My first thought was that to be right by the book, I would need to cancel and relist on .ca with the local pickup option.  A buyer did pick up from me once and had the QR code on their phone, and I had no idea what that was about!  I was hoping there was some kind of work around folks now about that would be ok.

The drop off, or meet them somewhere, is also very much in my self interest.  This is a new in the box large Lego sso I would not need to pack it.  The packing is important as keeping a box pristine is important to  most Lego folks.

As noted in a post, I would contact them see if they are even interested.  Maybe this was a gift to be shipped, etc.

I don't think I will ask about a relist.  If doing a drop off I would at least get them sign off on a receipt acknowliding they received it, though I know with an INR that will not matter.   I will think about it.

Thanks

Hi @lotzofuniquegoodies - once sold, there is not a way to add a different shipping service to the listing itself. If it had been listed with local pick-up as an option it should be available I imagine (even if listed on .com).

The current functionality of this is app-specific, so there will not be a way to enter the 6 digit code via PC at this point in time.

Thanks!

.com will only provide a local pick up option for the US, which makes sense.    In this case if the buyer was agreeable, I could have done a listing on .ca with local pickup.    Anyway, I did the local pickup, met at a neutral spot so I was not infringing on their home, and it was all super smooth.  Mutual feedback exchanged, all happy at both ends.
