I've been burned a couple times now, following relisting an item that is setup as a variation. It seems like when you relist, sold items are re-added back into the listing. Beware that you need to keep close attention to what you have sold if you are going to relist.
Not sure why eBay does this? I think its a bug. If an item sold, its gone, why would a re-list add it back in? Or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks
Shannon

This not a bug.
Relist creates a new listing based on the quantities the old listing had at the start.
...
What you want to do is to set the listing up as GTC (Good unTil Cancelled).
GTC automatically renews the listing every 30 days. Since the renewed listing is still the same listing, the quantities that are sold are kept track of and your reduced available inventory should be correct.

Not really a glitch. I believe that's how it is designed to work. I missed it too the first time it happened to me. Either using Relist or Sell Similar it should say as you start the process that items have sold or not. Then it's a matter of adjusting accordingly. I believe if you use GTC it works slightly differently. Possibly someone else would be better at explaining how that works exactly. Not an expert on that type of listing.

Thanks for the responses. I think ebay could make an improvement to the relisting process and simply ask that question, do you want to relist with the original quantities or with the remaining quantities. If they are listening, maybe an enhancement opportunity? Thanks

This just happened to me. I had to apologize to the buyer. She bought something that I knew was sold some time ago. I thought I was losing my marbles... I did not know that it relisted the item with the original amount. I did not check because it's not logical that it would do this.
If something is sold and the quantity change why on earth is it reverting to the original amount. It's already hard to keep track of items and now we have to also check every time we relist?
Please eBay change this. It just doesn't make sense and it will eliminate issues.
Thanks!

Use GTC -- it keeps track of items sold.
Regular Auction/BIN relisting does not keep track (because the relist is a new listing based on the original).

Hi @greenmangoes - @ypdc_dennis is correct in his breakdown of the situation: a relist will pull from the original stated quantities. If you relist/sell similar on your listings you will want to make sure that you check the quantities when doing so.
Alternatively, a Good Til Cancelled listing will have persistent quantity from renewal to renewal, it won't reset.
Thanks!

My understanding is that if you end a GTC manually and then list it again it will use the original quantity, not the current quantity. Please confirm what happens to a manually ended GTC when you relist and when you sell similar.
I ask because some sellers are thinking of ending at day 29 of the first cycle of the GTC. Others are thinking of ending after a few months.

Hi @pocomocomputing - that would be accurate, because it would be a relist.
A GTC item renews every 30 days (currently, soon to be monthly), retains the same item number and quantity numbers.
If a GTC item is ended and then relisted, it will have a different item number and pull from the originally input quantities.
Semantics, I realize, but the 'relist vs renewal' one is a pretty big distinction at least in eBay speak. 🙂

It starts as a new listing (not a continuation) so back to original values.

So basically if you end a listing MANUALLY it reverts to the original quantity when you relist it - correct?
If that is so, is there no way for it not to do that? If eBay can make it revert to the original quantity why can they make it NOT go back to the original quantity when it's relisted?
I often end and relist items based on the season. This is a lot more work trying to keep track of things.
Now I have to go over all my listings to make sure they are correct as I did not know this was happening 😞
