Mandatory? No.
Advantages? Has all of eBay's negotiated rates and services with Canada Post. Any special rates or future services ebay rolls out will be exclusive to Shippo. We'll have to see moving forward how rates compare between Shippo, Paypal, Snapship, etc. User ypdc_dennis has already done multiple comparisons in various threads here. At some point the automated posting back of shipment information to ebay may switch between platforms (no idea if paypal is still updating automatically to ebay as I don't use it), so that may be a factor for some.
Keep using paypal? Sign up for a Canada Post account (Solutions for Small Business) and plug that into paypal. The rates and services available will correspond to your account.
