BidPay being discontinued

I know some sellers don't take PayPal and rely on BidPay instead.

According to their site:

Effective December 31, 2005, BidPay.com, Inc. will be discontinuing operations. As a result, BidPay will no longer offer payment services to the online auction industry. We regret any inconvenience to our users and thank them for their loyal patronage. Customer service will remain available at bidpayservice@bidpay.com through the month of February.

I didn't see this mentioned here so I thought I would pass it on.

BidPay being discontinued

Well that really sucks!

I've done 544 transaction via BidPay and will miss them.

Wonder what the problem was, probably a combination of troubles from eBay and more likely trouble from the credit card companies (Visa specifically).

That is definitely sad news... One of the safest payment methods for sellers.

Anything else to replace it?

eBay Users Lose Payment Option, BidPay to Close
By Ina Steiner
AuctionBytes.com
December 23, 2005

Online payment service BidPay posted a notice on its home page informing users it was discontinuing operations. The service, owned by Western Union and started in 1999, allows auction buyers to purchase money orders online to send to eBay sellers.

A notice was posted on the homepage on December 23, 2005, stating BidPay would be discontinuing operations effective December 31, 2005. Customer service will remain available at bidpayservice@bidpay.com through the month of February.

eBay owned PayPal dominates online payment for auction transactions, and no major competitor remains. c2it, a service of Citibank, ceased operations 2 years ago, and CheckFree stopped taking payments for auctions in October of 2005 (CheckFree's service remains). Yahoo also shuttered its service, Yahoo PayDirect, in May 2005.

ProPay, which allows users to send money to and from checking accounts and accept credit cards from members and non-members, is still operating.

Attempts to reach BidPay today for comment were unsuccessful.

😞 Well I am not happy about this. I have never used Paypal because of the extra costs to us as Canadians and the lousy conversion rate they offer. It looks like there will be no alternative now. I am one unhappy camper.

Absolutely! BidPay owned by First Data one of the larger US financial companies (probably top 25).
