You have to agree to a bid twice, before it is recorded.
To cancel a bid, don't click the second time.
You can retract a bid, but the reasons to do so are few and retractions will show on your feedback page. Some sellers will not accept bids from bidders with retractions.
You can also use Contact Seller to ask him to cancel your bid. Most sellers will agree, but will add your name to their Blocked Bidder List.
There is a Watch This Item button near the Bid button. Use that if you want to keep an eye on a particular listing. If you have several similar items, the Watch List will even allow you to do a side by side comparison.

Hello 'bluemoon',
If you follow this link, it will tell you how to remove that bid from your listing:
http://pages.ebay.ca/help/sell/manage_bidders_ov.html#canceling
You will need to enter the item number and the user ID of the bidder, then pick a reason, like 'bidder requested cancellation' or something. Then press the "cancel bid" button. The form you do this on will look like so:
http://offer.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?CancelBidShow
Apart from that I don't see the difficulty. Perhaps you could elaborate a little as to the nature of the obstacle?
