Hello 'danog',
Wow, you're an intrepid soul, making a remark like that around here. 🙂  How did you manage to buy - and sell - without one?  Perhaps things were different in the past.  Anyway, to buy you do not need a paypal account.  You do, however, need a valid credit card.  Some folks say a prepaid card will work too.  You might find a few sellers who will wait for a money order, but so many promised money orders and cheques never actually show up it is not particularly popular.
If, however, you have a credit card smouldering away in your wallet, you're good to go.  After you buy the item, you click 'Pay Now', and the next page you see has your price info on the left and payment choice on the right.  The credit card option is the top one.  Click to go to your payment options, enter your card info - exactly as it appears on your card billing address - confirm, ... and then wait for the item to show up at your door.
Happy shopping. 🙂

Sellers are no longer allowed to state they accept cheques or money orders.

You will need to either open a paypal account or ask sellers prior to bidding if they would accept a money order. They can say they accept that way but they are not allowed to say they accept them in their listing.

Non paying buyers deserve unpaid item strikes.

EBay uses your valid credit card as a rough and ready proof of identity and proof that you are over 18 (since credit cards are not available to under 18s)( prepaid cards do not have a "credit" function. The holder cannot spend more than is on the card.)
But sciguy is right, ask your seller before bidding if you can pay with a money order. Most will be delighted since all the costs of the payment rest with you and if there is a problem the refund is dependent wholly on the seller's goodwill.
