So far, I have had over 60 views on an item I have currently listed for sale and every time I check, the number goes up. This incredible number and rate of views has never happened before. Despite the increase in views, there is only one watcher. Is this common? By the way, the item is a book!!!

Views are generally meaningless these days based on my experience, and to a lesser degree the same could be said of watchers. Don't expect a high conversion rate on views to sales unless you are significantly priced better than the market. I would put more stock in areas like the number of your followers.

It is what it is.....
The number of viewers and/or the number of watchers is an indication of who has seen your listing.
But... and a big ...BUT... no guarantee of a sale
People that are interested view your listing...
Watchers are people who want a link to your listing... potential buyers... or competitors with the same or similar item for sale

It's common.
I've had 150 views with 1 watcher, and 73 views with 8 watchers.... Neither sold. and were relisted.
My items with watchers are a very small percentage of sales.
I don't place much credence in watchers, but find the tool invaluable when I'm buying.
Views give me an indication of interest.
If it doesn't sell there's factors on both sides to consider.

In auctions most of the bids come at the last minute, even the last second.
While I agree that watchers are not the same as buyers, there may be some bids already in with automatic snipe companies ready to leap at the 30 second mark.
Or not.
An interesting group of titles by the way. EBay will get you a worldwide audience.
It would be interesting to know if you get any Best Offers before the end of the auction from dealers.

I noticed one of my records had way more views than expected and when I checked the listing I noticed that I had made a big mistake in the listing which I guess was attracting attention. Thankfully there were no bids and I was able to go and revise the listing.
I had over 800 items listed at that time and would never have found the typo if not for the unusual amount of watchers.
It might not hurt to double check your listing

I find that if I get a watcher, the item will sell soon about 1 in 3 times. I rarely get over 50 views on a 30 day Fixed Price listings. Auctions I can get over 50 if it is an interesting item.

I sold something the other day that had no watchers.

Great to get views but if you are getting too many view any only a very small portion of watchers , then there could be something your viewers are not impressed with. This could be condition or description of the item or your shipping cost. If you had 60 view and only 1 watcher, that shows there is interest. I would suspect one of the above mentions may apply to you.
To answer your question. It is common. But as I said, there could be something wrong with your listing. If I get 60+ views you should at least get 1 watcher in 20 views.

After a week with no payment, it is time to open an unpaid item case. Don't hesitate!!

" the buyer had listed three bids, which I assume means they were automatic in some way."
Looking at the three bids, it is pretty clear that the buyer was absent and using a "snapping tool" to place his bids.
Considering his very high feedback rating, I would be patient and wait at least two weeks from the time of the bids before sending a third message.

Thanks for the advice! I thought that perhaps he/she was away or ill or something and wanted to wait awhile as I did take note of the high ranking the buyer has. I'd like to believe that there is a valid reason for not being in contact and so will indeed wait a bit longer.

I have to disagree. How would you ever sell your item without views? Even if they did not generate a sale (which i don't agree with), views at the very least shows that you have something that people took the time to look at. Views are a great tool to give you information about what you are selling and how you are selling it.
I would be very concerned if I have no views on any of my lists.
