I purchased an item. Paid for it. Checked on it's status yesterday and see this message.
"This listing was removed by eBay. If you already paid for the item, we recommend that you wait 10 days from the expected delivery date to see if the item arrives. If you did not pay,you are no longer obligated to pay for this item. If you have a problem with the purchase, you canresolve the problem by filing a claim through our Resolution Centre."
What the hell does this mean? How am I to know what the 'expected delivery date' is now that all links seem to have gone dead?

It means that eBay pulled the listing (and possibly all listings by that seller) for some policy violation.
This is usually fraudulent behaviour and of course, you will be entitled to get your money back.
The reason for the delay is that occasionally, eBay will go to the seller's attached credit card for their monthly fees and the card has expired.
Seller don't pay eBay, eBay don't support seller.
So.
You are protected.
And just as you were advised, wait the 10 days. The seller may have made an honest mistake about fees, but it is possible that the purchase is in the mail. Within the 10 days it would show up in your mailbox.
Allow 20 days from purchase for North America and 15 for Europe.
With Asia, file immediately.
However, if the pull was for scammy behaviour, it won't turn up and then you start the Dispute and get your refund.
Allow for human error, but protect yourself.

Thanks but I don't see the appropriate choice in 'customer support'. The item in question is confirmed paid for, according to my Visa statement, and 'in transit' according to Ebay. But the user is no longer registered. Should I just go to Paypal and try to get my money back? This has really put me off Ebay; two bad transactions in a row.

"Should I just go to Paypal and try to get my money back? "
Yes, today.
