Well it has been a few weeks and sales in my field to US buyers on .ca are nil.  Normally I sell 80% to US buyers and 10% Canadian and 10% International.  The only US sales I have made are the ones listed on .com.

I have made 13 sales for April, I should have way more.  5 were listed on .com and they sold to US buyers.   8 were sold off .ca and they were listed on .ca.  7 were sold to CDN buyers and one was international.  Holding to my percentage, I should have sold about 80% more to US buyers.

In my field, CDN $ for US buyers doesn't work.

I feel for you and commend your bravery in trying this out.  This is just as I suspect - list in Canuck Bucks = no sales.

Have you tried out the .com site? It has it's challenges for sure but more effort to capture sales is worth it.

I'd love to be brave enough to convert everything over to Canadian $s JUST to see - I just can't risk the sales, my job or the headache!

The 'in my field' is probably the most important part of this.

You (and I ) sell commodities which are pretty widely available, unlike say, antique dolls or vases, which may have been mass produced but which over time have become less available.

So the slightest thing that makes our items harder to find or the tiniest bit confusing will lose buyers.

I am very slowly moving my listings for items I can ship LetterPost/LightPacket over to dotCOM and making those Free Shipping. I haven't seen any great difference yet except a slight rise in the number of overseas transactions.

I originally switched to dotCA because of the stupid media shipping cap of $4, which I am informed has since risen to $6, but the drop in the loonie makes the switch back more affordable.

I have about 620 listed on .ca and about 400 on .com.

I'll just have to live with the changes ebay makes.  I may have to move everything to .com, but I will wait and see.

I totally agree with this statement.  I find some US buyers are not very worldly.  I came across an article:

Police Called as American Tourist “Shocked” to Discover Canada has its “Own Currency”

A 46-year-old woman from Indiana has revealed her “shock” at discovering that Canadian’s have their own currency during a recent trip to Vancouver, British Columbia.

The woman was shopping in a W. Broadway store where she paid for numerous gifts using US currency. Upon receiving her change in Canadian dollars, shop assistants claim the woman became “deeply confused” and began screaming at them for “real money”. The store were forced to call local police as the woman refused to accept the “monopoly money”. Two VPD officers who arrived at the scene, were luckily successful in calming the woman down and explaining the misunderstanding.

After medical attention was provided, she revealed to Vancouver Police that she didn’t realize Canada had it’s own currency or was even it’s own country. “I honestly just thought it was a state, like Alaska,” she told local reporters. “Though, I was starting to wonder what was wrong with all the flags.”

The woman’s “revelation” also led to a similar stir on her social media accounts. Having updated her Facebook friends vigilantly on her movements, throughout her 2 week stay, she immediately relayed to them the new information: “Oh WOW, you guys won’t believe this,” she wrote. “Did you know that Canada has its own currency??? It’s even called the dollar, too!! #LearnSomethingNew”. Two minutes later she added: “P.S. It’s still raining.”

The most liked comment on the woman’s status came from her sister, who wrote: “OMG!! That’s soooo cute. It’s like they’re their own country!”

A few days later, the woman posted another status update, this time featuring several selfies of herself with various Canadian bills and coins: “They have old dollar coins that they call loonies. I think they’re the loonies! Haha! Still raining….”

I really don't think it matters right now about currency..

Sales right now are verrrrrrry slowwwwwwwwwwwww  everywhere.

I did not sell any of my CAD $ listings so far. So for now (starting yesterday in fact), every new listing I make is in US $. No more CAD $. It just not working for me. I will probably make the switch to .com when the tool is made available (at least items I can ship Letter Mail/Light Packet).

Well I hate to say it but this has been my best month this year,,,converted about 3/4 of my 8000 listings to $Can ,,made small price adjustment and it seems to be working out . Haven't done the Can vs US sales comparison but it's close to 50/50. And I sell low value ,,common area. Not a high $ value but it's just a hobby and keeps me in beer money  🙂

I have been humming and hawing about switching to CDN,but after reading that , it proves what I have been saying , that American see our items listed in CDN and they get confused. I am aware that on.com in the search it comes up USD but once they click on the listing and seeing CDN currency is what I am concerned about.

Still haven't made up my mind if I should switch to .com. I will wait as we get closer. Hopefully this tool that Ebay is coming up with will make the transaction to switch to .com easy.

I still don't get why Ebay needs to do this. If they think somehow this will create more revenue for them, then I think they will be in for a big surprise. They should worry more about drawing in more customers to Ebay than to once again up rooting a bunch of .CA sellers to .com.

"once they click on the listing and seeing CDN currency is what I am concerned about. "

I have sold tens of thousands of eBay items over the last fifteen years listed on eBay.ca in Cdn$ and sold to Americans.

They keep on buying.

The "confusion" is grossly overestimated.

And you're probably right. In a low estimate I would say ( I don't know just a guess ) 10% of americans don't even know where Canada is? 20% don't know much if anything about Canadian currency. Mine as well be Yen. so if we were to agree that 20% would have issues with our currency ( 65,000000 people.Larger than the population of Canada ) how many of these people would not purchase because of a different currency.

Of course I am only guessing, but remember that not only are some ignorant to currency but  when arriving to a different country are surprised that the native people don't speak english. So its safe to say the currency issue is valid. To what exact degree who knows.

In order to sell my item I need one buyer and I would hate to see that buyer leave for the only reason, currency.

I just wish they had given us more time to experiment/try to figure it out. 1-2 months is not enough time for me to figure out what currency method works best for me. The eBay stats/research show that it makes no difference wether I list in US or Can (they say that there's no increase in sales when listing in Can currency in the fashion category). So if these "research results" are strictly category related, why didn't they just force listing in Can$ only in specific categories?

So far, (and it's WAY too soon to make any conclusions), I've only made the following observations:
_Items listed on .com get a lot more views than items listed on .ca but I've only sold a few (they don't seem to sell)
_I'm getting more Canadian buyers but they are mostly purchasing my US Currency items on .ca. Whether that's because they are initially attracted to Can currency items, then upon further browsing decide to buy items in US$, I don't know.
_My higher priced/unique handmade items (in 1 of my stores) seem to sell just as well when listed in Can but my store with low priced items do better in US currency.
_Increased International sales to Europe; they seem to be attracted to Can currency items.

*eBay should give us more time to decide what to do with our Good Till Cancelled listings, I don't want to transfer them to .com and not be able to transfer them back if things don't work out.

Oh and one thing I'm loving about .com is the option to donate a % to charity and I would love to see that option available on .ca.

Update:

So far, I have made 23 sales for April on ebay, I should have way more.

9 were listed on .com and they all sold to US buyers.  All US buyers, no Cdn or international.

14 were sold off .ca and they were listed on .ca in Cdn $.  9 were sold to CDN buyers, 2 were international and 3 were to the USA.  In this period holding to my averages, I should have at least 18 sales to the USA from .ca not a measly 3.

Now selling on .ca, I have reduced my prices and shipping cost, so that is why I have so many Cdn buyers.

Conclusion, In my field, CDN $ for US buyers doesn't work. If I want to sell to the US, my largest market, I will have to list in US $.

I have 367 listed on .com, and 710 on .ca.   I should have about a lot more sold by this time in the month than the 24 so far.  It's like the US buyers don't see/want my .ca listings listed in Cdn $.

In fairness, when checking your listings I found that more than half (65%+) were listed in the last three and half days (since last Friday night).

Patience.

And then, when checking your American competitors, I see them selling at much lower price than you (including shipping to the USA)
