Pay Pal vs Credit Card...

I want to purchase an item using my credit card - ebay is ONLY giving me the option of  using Pay Pal (as I've used it in past purchases).. why don't I have the option to use Visa if I want(?!)

You can use visa as long as you have a paypal account with your Visa card linked to it

and do not have a balance in your paypal account.

Only big sellers will take credit cards not through Paypal as it

is too expensive for small sellers

Very few sellers can take credit cards directly. And most buyers are loath to give their credit card information to strangers over the internet.

Paypal gives a neutral interface for both buyers and sellers. There is no charge to buyers to use the service and if you back your Paypal account with a credit card, your payments will be instant and you will have two levels of protection against possibly unsatisfactory transactions, PP's Buyer Protection program and your card's chargeback program.
