I thought about this yesterday when I was looking for Lisa. I was getting impatient wondering if anyone had seen her. I didn't want to post in another thread because it may have been mised, so I had to email her instead. (Which was no problem by the way)

Then I thought...maybe we could have a thread where we could come and ask about someone or just to say something that just doesn't pertain to anything in particular. It's always a bit weird going 'off subject' in someone else's thread.

So, this thread will be for EVERYone and it could be about ANYthing. You don't ever have to use it, but if you need to, great. Doesn't mean you can't make your own thread, it just mimics the ski chalet after a day of skiing. Say what you want - ask what you want - show your pictures - comment on the dot com threads (yuk yuk) A veritable freebie. I hope it will be useful but if it's not - then...$screw you guys - I'm going home! 🙂

Jackie,
I am not changing from musical instruments we are just adding to our product mix (part of our original plan).

Glenda
Last evening I spoke with the lady who is having me sell her Chinese collection and furniture and she said she is learning more about Chinese history, as it relates to all of her things, from a Westerner than she knew before.

She wants me to save it all on a CD for her (our listings with pics and all the history behind the items).

We will probably start into Britsh collectables in March or April.

It is really interesting learning history through selling antiques

You know, after reading Glenda's post (739), I really wonder what the heck I am doing living here in Northern Ontario... (bulbs are popping up!!!!!).

The only thing up here is the heating bill and the snow drifts.....

You know Jeff, the thing that really makes me wonder, is not the number of people who live in some of the harsher climates in the country, it's the ones who live here in Victoria and actually wish for snow!! Go figure!!

How many square kilometres of the country could they go find snow? How many can they go find NO snow?!! There just ain't no accountin' for people!

Sorry I couldnt make it for lunch today. I had to ship out some instruments and I then took my 84 year old mother out for Chinese buffet (after all it is the Year of the Monkey so I should fit right in).

It is bloody cold outside today with a wind that is just howling up the back of my ski jacket.

Thats it, I am staying inside until the temperature rises above 5 C.

I'm with you Malcolm!

The only time I venture out anymore is to pick up my 4 year old son off the school bus. A necessary evil!

Monique - that's no way to talk about your son! 🙂

I'd invite you all here but the weatherman's threatening us with sub-zero this weekend. I might have to speak to Jeff about winter golf gloves!

All is beautifully quiet with my youngest son who is 3 until the older one comes home from kindergarten, then all hades breaks loose.

I have an older son who was essentially raised as an only child and was soooo easy. Now I have two boys only a year apart and I understand why people can't control their children in public!

I really do adore being with them actually (which is why I'm trying to work from home), but I do recognize them for what they are, cute little monsters!

Brings back memories Monique! My two were a boy and his younger sister - the fireworks started when she was barely standing and he was trying to snuggle up to her - she left tooth marks on his nose that lasted for 2 days! And they were mostly like oil & water until they were both grown and discovered they really do like each other after all! Actually, they were very good at cooperating when it came time to play "let's drive mommy nuts"!

Don't let anyone tell you it's hell to grow older - at least the kid's stages are way behind you and the memories leave you warm & fuzzy!

Morning everyone - well it looks like there is a 90% chance that we will be leaving wonderful old QC for a job in Waterloo, Ontario. If this works out, the job will start on March 31. Not much time to pack up a life and head out, so I'll keep you all informed. The conference call interview went fantastic. Now there's a one-on-one on Feb 2. That's when we'll know for sure.

I'm afreaid to say it but YIPPPPEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!! I'll keep you all apprised of the good word!!

Hugs,

There goes the neighborhood... lol.

Good for you, Jackie. Give me a shout the day of the interview and, if the time allows, I'd love to meet you for a caffeine break. I've been in the KW area for 15 years so I may also be able to give you a little insight into the area (housing, schools, etc.)

If you still have my email I would be happen to answer any questions on the area.

Now, where did I put that darn red carpet?.....

Cheers!

Glenda, no problem sending out a pair of winter Golf Gloves.... how many pair do you need?????

We also have two children (actually adolescents now). A girl who will be 15 in a couple of months and a boy who just turned 12.

They also fight like cats and dogs when we are around, but every now and then things happen that show that under the facade they really do care for one another. Such was the case a few weeks ago. Here we are living through the cold that is gripping most of the rest of the country and my son was coming home alone to an empty house. Unexpectedly, I found myself home early and was able to greet him. But about 10 minutes after the time he was to arrive home, my daughter called the house just to ensure that he got in okay and was not stranded outside in the cold......

Made me feel good that they behind our back, they tend to look out for one another. (I am truly blessed).

Thanks guys. You'd be right about the flea markets, Malcolm. Apparantly the St. Jacobs one is incredible.

Bill you doll you!!! I will definitely refer any queries to you, when the come up. It's so hard to know even where to start looking when the entire place is strange. As soon as it's confirmed, I'll fire you an email and ask some important questions. Thanks a bunch.

Sorry to disappoint Jackie, but there is no flea market in St Jacobs. In fact, there is only one remaining regular and it is in Cambridge. It is a poor place to shop for jewelry though.

KW and St Jacobs has become a haven for factory outlets. Most are thinly disguised retail outlets with very few seconds or end of runs. Many of the products sold by the factory outlet stores have products manufactured for them. It may say Hilfiger but it is a poorer quality product than what is typically found in regular retail stores.

The only true flea market in the area is in Aberfoyle which is closer to Guelph. There is some jewelry but on our last trip there it seemed that the whole market was gravitating towards furniture. There are also some great antique shops in Shakespeare (on Hwy 7 going towards Stratford).

And to clarify, yes, the whole place is STRANGE... lol

Some facts:

Of the three cities that make up Waterloo region, Waterloo has the lowest property tax (for now).

Even though the area has one of the strongest economies in the country and amongst the lowest unemployment ratios, housing prices are still very reasonable. The average single family home has just barely crept over 200K. Compare that to Toronto or Vancouver (or Ottawa, Malcolm).

Waterloo's strong suit is technology (RIM, Dalsa)

Cambridge is automotive (Toyota)

Kitchener leans more toward the service sector with some manufacturing including Budd and Lear

Current Populations

Kitchener - 200K
Waterloo - 90 K
Cambridge - 100K
Guelph - 70 K

Gas today was at .739 L

From the northern most point of Waterloo to the southern most point of Cambridge would be a 40 minute drive (most of it expressway).

From the eastern most point on the 401 to the western most point would be approximately a 15 minute drive.

From KW it is:

45 minutes to Mississauga
1 hour to London
45 minutes to Hamilton/Burlington
2.5 hours to Ft. Erie/Buffalo

There... that's all I know.

Cheers!

Bill, that was wonderful. I am so grateful that you took the time to post that. My only distress is the housing costs. That was shocking. So what cities can you live and still comfortably work in Waterloo? By that, I mean a reasonable commute.

As far as renting goes, which city would have the best choices for middle class living???

Thanks,

Jackie...

Oh yeah, re the flea market thingy....that was my mistake. I thought I remembered Karen telling me that there was a huge antiques market there. But, no matter. I don't mind driving to a good place for antiquing. Cripes, I'd go to Grand Bend for the day and not find that a huge distance to go.

Jackie, are you thinking of rural living. There are a great number of small towns within spittin' distance of Waterloo. I'm not sure what distance you would feel comfortable with. I don't know how big a place you need but 3 bedroom townhomes and bungalows can be had for about $850 - $1000 a month in the cities.

If you want I can email you some scans of the newspaper ads tomorrow or check:
