What the ____ is happening in the USA!!

A couple of months ago a fellow walked into a theatre and started shooting people.

The other day a fellow walks in a mall and starts shooting but luckily his gun jammed and only two people were killed.

Today a man walks in an elementary school in Connecticut. And 27 are dead, including children. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/5569025c-4613-11e2-ae8d-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2F3FPan2u

What the ____ is happening in the USA!!

Conservative columnist and former Bush speechwriter David Frum taeks aim at the NRA and their sympathizers:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/12/14/every-day-is-the-day-to-talk-about-gun-control.html

And I'll say: I'll accept no lectures about "sensitivity" on days of tragedy like today from people who work the other 364 days of the year against any attempt to prevent such tragedies.

"It's bad enough to have a gun lobby. It's the last straw when that lobby also sets up itself as the civility police. It may not be politically possible to do anything about the prevalence of weapons of mass murder. But it damn well ought to be possible to complain about them - and about the people who condone them."

The sale and easy ownership in the US of assault type rifles with clips that can hold massive amounts of bullets is a big problem. Also semi-auto handguns are way too easy to get and they too can have standard clips or clips that can hold more bullets.

It will be interesting to know what specific types of guns he had and the clip sizes as well as how he got them if what their family neighbour said is true, which was Lanza had mental problems.

What the ____ is happening in the USA!!

CNN is reporting that the guns were legally registered to the shooters mother.  There is a strict ban on the ownership of assault rifles in Connecticut.  However, the rifle owned by the mother was owned prior to 1992 when the law came into effect.  She was allowed to keep it and it was registered to her.

The poison analogy turns out to be close to the truth.  The shooter had mental issues.  According to CNN, he had autism and "personality disorders".  Knowing that, why would he have been allowed to access these weapons?  They should have been locked away where he could not get to them.

What does it matter? We know that he had at least 27 fatal bullets.  Whether he had 28 or 2800 is irrelevant to the parents and families of those killed.

I cannot imagine the pain of those parents still waiting, many hours after the shooting, to see their deceased children.  The police are still investigating and dead children are still lying on the cold floor of those classrooms.

Don't bother.  I have heard all the arguments.  I have heard all the reasoning.  A just god - not today.

This gets towards the fallacy that many gun lovers fall back on - the whole "guns don't kill - people do" myth.

The problem is that guns are everywhere in the U.S. Recently someone did a roll call on a pro football team (following the dramatic murder suicide involving a player last week) and turned out nearly every single member of the team was carrying. It was brought up how nonsensical that was given that these men are trained to be aggressive, competitive, etc.

But the main point is that, with so many guns everywhere, even if greater efforts were made to keep guns away from those judged unfit to own them, these people would easily be able to snitch a gun at any friend's house, any random place they break into, in some acquaintance's drawer, some hiding place at work or whatever...

The way to start resolving this problem is to start closing the tap on gun availability in general.

Hi all,

I think what the U.S. needs besides tighter gun control is to have mental health professionals available for students through the school system, as I am sure most people can't afford to see one privately.

I also think that all schools (here as well) should have anger management classes as part of their mandatory curriculum, all the way through high school at least.

It's scary that this is starting to feel like the norm. We're not really surprised when we hear about a mass shooting anymore.

A very sad day!

Banning/registering guns only means that the law adiding person will not have them.    The minority gangs in Toronto have no trouble getting illegal guns.

It’s a personal thing. I know guns, sold them for years. Some of the US states have laws different than other states, so to buy a gun in one state where it is legal and take it to another state where it is not, is a piece of cake. The inconsistencies in US gun laws makes them even more difficult to enforce. The US has a Federal law banning assault weapons but the definition of ‘assault’ varies. Concealed/carry either open to visibility or not and the requirement for a carry permit also varies state to state.

Also an assault type weapon is far more dangerous than a handgun and so is the body count wherever one is used. When witnesses who heard the shots in the school said it seemed like rapid fire and as if there was a 100 shots, my first feeling was it was an assault rifle. Based on what you said in post 22, it seems my hunch was correct.

According to CNN, he had autism and "personality disorders". Knowing that, why would he have been allowed to access these weapons? They should have been locked away where he could not get to them.

To the best of my knowledge there are no laws for gun storage in the US, so anywhere is acceptable. There is even a company that makes storage for under beds and the gun pops out at an instant with the touch of a finger, like a kitchen cupboard door. There are framed pictures you can hang in your hallway and with a touch of a finger it opens up and behind it is a handgun.

In the US they do not ask who is living at home and if the person has mental problems. Only the person requesting the firearms permit is checked out.

It is at times like this that I cannot believe there is a god - one that would allow something like this to happen.

And they will say……..’god works in mysterious ways’. Do I believe there is a loving caring ‘god’…..not for a moment. Based on his resume through history……it stinks to high heaven.

Where were these ubiquitous guns when this nutcase opened fire ?

They probably don’t carry them in an elementary school and who could have guessed this would happen! But many people in the US carry guns, openly or concealed. You can also carry a concealed weapon in Connecticut but you need a permit. How difficult it is to get one I don’t know. I do know in Texas it is easy to get a carry. In Arizona anyone over 21 can carry. ‘The Right to Bear Arms’…..in the Constitution and part of American culture.

The US is a country of coporate greed.

The US is the largest gun manufacturer in the world and the largest exporter of guns in the world. Huge industry employing 10’s of thousands of people. They’re not going to give that up, or even alter it in any way that will lose……money.

Banning/registering guns only means that the law adiding person will not have them.

The question is…..what happens when a law abiding citizen does use them? In the US….virtually nothing. You have a right to protect your home and property. In Canada...much different. Case in point………A couple of years ago a man in Pt Colborne Ont watched three masked men firebomb his home. It was caught on security cameras and the tape was there for the police to see. It can still be seen on YouTube. The home owner also happened to be a ex-gun instructor in Ont. He went to his locked box, retrieved his handgun and loaded it and went outside. He didn’t shoot at the culprits, he just let a couple off in the air to scare them away. He was arrested by the OPP for using his gun.

gun is convenient and that's why is tool of choice if available. most gun crimes would happen anyway in gun controlled environment, they would just happen with different tool. this guy could have walked in with nail gun, chain saw or just a kitchen knife and cause the same havoc. seriously, nobody sees this, everyone blames the gun? wake up folks

A gun is the most ‘convenient’, but using any of those other weapons would first of all not created the same destruction and secondly those other weapons are much easier to defend against. Guns can be shot from hundreds of feet away….the other weapons mean having to get up close and personal and most of these murderers do not want to do that. Bullets also cause massive body destruction especially if it is the right ammunition. No it is not the gun….but it is the ‘convenience of the gun’ that makes it so attractive for death and destruction.

The thing about the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights is how it is worded….totally. It states……..” A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”  So it is how you interpret the meaning. Does it mean only when a militia is needed or everyone having a firearm just incase a militia is needed. This has been challenged in the US and on both occassions the courts decided that it is the right of the people to own guns and states do not have an individual right to change that law.

US citizens own approx 270 Million of the 875 million known guns in the world. Personally I think 270 is probably a bit low. In the US there is approx 90 guns per 100 people. So……….nothing is changing in the US any time soon.

What the ____ is happening in the USA!!

If it isn't the guns then why doesn't this happen in Canada all the time.....

It is a mixture of messed up people with easy access to guns...

Someone said if no guns they would use a chainsaw or kitchen knife well maybe but then by time he killed 1 or 2 the rest would be gone and we wouldn't be hearing about 20 dead children...

It is the Guns ... Teenager and young adults no matter how easy there life really is they at some times things everything is really hard and unfair...

When I was a young teen I thought of taking my life 2 or 3 timeseven though I had it very good with my family I thought life was tough and not fair...

I say tighten the guns law Specially the age your allowed.. Getting guns illegal is not too hard but alot harder then turning 18 and walking into walmart ...I think something else that would help is maybe some metal detectors at schools.. Stop Publicizing these things to make these idiots into celebrities

Young Minds find even the fairest things unfair and the easiest things tough so why let an 18years old have a gun..

Laws need to change to scare these people to not do those things.. Maybe Lethal Injection should come back.. I wouldn't mind seeing all these crazy get knocked off the planet

IT IS TIME FOR SERIOUS CHANGES

Good question because Canada has very high amount of firearms.

The UN reported that Canada ranks third among the developed western countries (behind the United States and Norway) in the civilian ownership of firearms.

http://www.cdnshootingsports.org/tenmyths.html

Perhaps different mentality, education, lower society polarization, immigration policies (while US has been running immigration lottery, Canada has been cherry-picking its immigrants).

Guns and licenses are available, accessible and legal guns are plentiful in Canada.

Yet most gun crimes are committed by illegal unregistered firearms. Will tighter gun control prevent them? I don't think so.

Here is my thoughts on that ...

Yes but here is the thing Candians have firearms to hunt and for sport..

American have them for fun and TO PROTECT THEMSELVES "From who" The other people Carrying guns ...

The mentality is different for sure... Immigration I don;t think has much to do with it Most of these shootings are White Americans...

Stricter Gun laws Would help with this for sure no doubt about it ...

You will never stop criminals from finding a way but changing the gun laws would change the way average non criminal Americans are with Guns...

I mean Really I have given some beatdowns and gotten some beat downs .. I have had people with golf clubs and bats come after me and I have had Guns to my head and still I do not feel the need to have a gun to protect myself ....Americans need to change their Mentality Sometimes the streets are tough but a broken jaw or nose will heal you don't need to take a life to avoid a broken nose just take the broken nose and move on ...

The more guns the more chances the more laws the less guns the less chances.. Changing the Law may not fix it but it's a startt

What the ____ is happening in the USA!!

On CNN, this morning, they were talking to a lady who represents the gun lobby.  Her statement: maybe the school should have had weapons.  If the teachers had been armed, they could have taken out the shooter before he did so much damage.

The NRA and other gun organizations were asked for comments.  None!  They are waiting to find out further details.  They don't even bother to express condolences to the families.

Gun availability is the problem.  This shooter had easy access.  He problem didn't have the ability to make a bomb.  Most homes don't have a nail gun, as has been stated as an alternative.  If Americans need to own a gun.  Let them - but only single shot weapons that have to be reloaded for each subsequent shot.  Doesn't solve the problem, but maybe slows it down.  Ultimately, if there were no guns - then these 20 kids would most likely still be alive.

Criminals can access guns - many of them stolen from legal gun owners.  Criminals are a small part of the problem.  A gang member didn't shoot these kids.  The ready access to guns in American homes is the problem.

I am confident that nothing will change.  The gun lobby is all-powerful.  The "right to bear arms" is enshrined in the Constitution.  Obama has been soft on gun control for all of his time in office.  No politician or political party has the balls to tackle the issue.  Billion dollar gun registries don't help.  The guns the shooter used were all "legal" in Connecticut and registered.

Gun storage is a partial solution.  Guns need to be securely stored so mentally unbalanced individuals and children cannot access them so well.  However, I have a brother-in-law who is a hunter.  His guns are securely stored.  They key hangs on the wall in a kitchen cupboard.  His wife and kids and most of his relatives know where the key is.  Very secure!

What the ____ is happening in the USA!!

A horrible, horrible day for the parents of the children and everyone else in the world.

The knee-jerk reaction is typical - get rid of guns. Realistically, this will never happen. Organizations like the NRA are too strong, and every American has the 'right to bear arms' Even if there was some kind of gun control, the bad guys will always have them.

The real problem is the nut cases who do this kind of stuff. How can anyone control this problem? You can't get into their heads and change their ideas before the crimes happen. You can;t put someone in jail just because they are twisted and invite you to McDonalds.

It's a growing problem.

I wonder if the current economic problems in the US have something to do with this? I don;t believe it can be blamed on things like music or movies - this stuff has been around for a long time.
