What the ____ is happening in the USA!!

A couple of months ago a fellow walked into a theatre and started shooting people.

The other day a fellow walks in a mall and starts shooting but luckily his gun jammed and only two people were killed.

Today a man walks in an elementary school in Connecticut. And 27 are dead, including children. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/5569025c-4613-11e2-ae8d-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2F3FPan2u

"Where did they all wind up when Rideau Regional was closed?"

The answer from a retired nurse:

"They went to group homes. Two new double houses were built in SFalls and are staffed 24/7 and there are several other residence around town with lesser supervision.  More like boarding houses.  Some people took the best behaviours into their homes.  The gov pays well. Some went to retirement homes and some went to nursing homes.  Some live independently and some landed in jail."

"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are."--Unknown

’now don’t be non-violent’.

Freudian slipt?

Seriously, most of the video games you win by killing someone or something.  T.V. now shows us graphic violence and the new wave of forensics shows like bones gets usused to seeing dead people in various forms of decay resulting from ever-weirder forms of brutality.

We are definitely dehumanizing the act of killing.  In the minds of many, these acts are not real.  They are just fiction - especially when the same actor gets killed one season and returns two seasons later.  I wonder if this shooter in Newtown was simply acting out a video game or movie script in his head and he had no awareness that he was killing in reality.

Here in Ontario, they closed the Ontario Regional Centre north of Woodstock - I think it was in 2000 or 2001.  There were over 1000 patients.  Around 400 stayed in Woodstock; many in small apartments above the stores on Dundas Street

At the time, I worked in Woodstock and started work at 6:00 am.  On my drive in at 5:30, I would see so many people who appeared to be aimlessly wandering the streets or sitting on benches.  They appeared lost, staring off into space.  These people had some money coming in from disability.  I believe that the government paid the landlords directly.  They had nothing to do, nowhere to go and no programs in the community.  It seriously taxed the local police who were constantly getting calls about their newest citizens.  I worked security at the Slots.  These people quite often arrived on the gaming floor and annoyed the regular customers.  You couldn't blame them.  It was noisy and bright and sometimes exciting.  Most of them eventually got banned.

This is how we treat some of the most vulnerable of our people.

Absolutely correct. Thankfully, I guess, due to my klutziness (and stroke 2 years ago!), the only thing I win in my video games is the odd race. I can't do all the rapid button stuff on my Xbox to play any of the shooter games.

I recall when these types of games first came out, they were being touted as good things for kids - they help them build dexterity and muscle memory. I play my guitar to fo that ...

Lanza had screw loose and if he had no access to guns, he would find another way to serve death.

There is a good chance that the mere knowledge of his mother's collection of high-powered weaponry, knowing it was there and probably seeing it quite frequently, was a major part of what triggered the whole idea.

There have been several incidents in the news recently where the availability of the gun, the mere presence of it, was clearly the main reason (out of many others, no doubt) for shootings and deaths.

According to one report on CNN, he had gone to a range with his mother and learned how to shoot.

That was back in the good old days when we played Asteroids and Pacman.  I am so old, I remember PONG, which at the time seemed to require quite a bit of skill.

What the ____ is happening in the USA!!

I think there is a lot left to be learned and the cops say they have vital information but of course they also said it may be months before it is all disclosed. There are many bits and pieces that have come forth, and others that I personally have wonder about………

-  The mother was an interesting person. She seems to have been well liked by neighbours and friends, but yet here we have a school teacher, a kindergarten teacher who not only likes guns but also owned an assault rifle. Maybe that’s not unusual in the US, but I find it rather a stark contrast.

-  Also the mother was described by her sister-in-law as a ‘prepper’. I had to look up what that meant. It seems it means that she was part of a growing group of people who believed that something ‘terrible’ was going to happen and she was stockpiling food and assembling an arsenal of weapons. Basically, she was a devout survivalist.

-  At one point her son Adam was having problems in school and she took him out of school for a few years and home taught him. Based on media information this was already a kid who was having problems fitting in and then he was taken from the companionship of others and experiencing others and actually made even more isolated.

-  Neighbours have said that the mother was a very nice woman, but also very strict.

-  Then we have the 2008 divorce of the parents, initiated by the mother. Maybe this dissolution of the family instigated by the mother for whatever reason created a lot of resentment in Adam. A resentment that festered.

-  There are many people who seem normal on the outside but inside and privately they are much different. I know a couple with children who could be classed as survivalist in a sense. They are very self-sufficient and there is nothing wrong with that. They have a house full of guns, lots of guns, and there is nothing wrong with that. They are pillars of their community and especially their church. Nothing wrong with that. What is wrong however is that they keep very much to themselves on their beautiful rural property. The children are home schooled and they are also taught about mistrusting anyone who is not of their Christian faith and not of their race. The children do not participate in area sports but do everything with their parents. It is for the most part a very isolated world they live in.

There will be a lot of speculation about what brought Adam to do what he did, but it is interesting that he killed his mother at home and then went to the school to commit more murders of children who maybe to him represented something his mother enjoyed. Maybe he felt he had to destroy everything that may have mattered to his mother. Maybe he felt she loved them more than him.

Adam’s act stemmed from both anger and revenge and it seems to have been aimed at his mother, not his father or brother whom he could have just packed up and driven to and taken his revenge there. The answer to why this happened was between the mother and son.

I hope they do find out what triggered Adam to do what he did. Maybe a psychological profile will help others to help someone else down the line and prevent this in the future.

Well I guess we will have to wait for the media post mortem of information. There’s a long list of media contradictions which makes one wonder about the qualifications of a lot of the reporters. At first it was said Adam went into his mother’s kindergarten class and did the shooting and then later the media said it wasn’t her class and now it seems she wasn’t a teacher at all. The  old days of getting three verifications about any information seems to have passed away in history for reporters.

I can see a certain use for home schooling, but I can also see it may have problem points. It is probably understandable that some parents may not want their kids going to an inner school with a lot of problems and violence in a metropolitan city for instance. I suppose it’s all about ‘balance’ and what is taken away, things like interaction with other kids, that has to be replaced in other ways. Interaction is part of being human and part of joining the herd.

In the case of Adam Lanza however it ‘seems’ by all information that he needed ‘very special’ help and maybe he should have been going to a school for children with those problems.

However there still seems to be something missing from the equation of this family. Something dark that no one knew about. Interviews with family friends, associates and other kids who knew Adam said he was very quiet and introverted to the point of being overly ‘shy’ and avoiding people…..yet some say he was borderline genius. Many people said they had never seen inside the expensive home and the mother who played a weekly game with friends that rotated from home to home….when it came time for the game to be at Mrs Lanza’s home, it was always cancelled.

There will be a bit of information during the holiday season but mostly it will be set aside to keep everyone in the spirit of the season. Probably a resurgence about mid January and then it will fall off the radar until spring when some information will emerge and by mid summer……it will be all but forgotten. ‘Reports’ say that the kids will never go back to that school again, so it will probably be torn down at some point and Obama will be on the hook for the money to build a new school with no memories. He did offer to give them any help they needed.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I agree with Nu on that one. Wouldn't say "evil". Call it a (serious) downside. But it's obvious that one of the roles of school is to give children the time, experience and skills to be able to fit in one way or another and consequently find their niche in society. Take a kid out of school - it's almost like raising a wild animal as a family pet - and then turning it loose in the wild with no survival skills.

As for the survivalist gun-lovers out there envisioning some sort of future Mad Max adventureland where their guns will save them... I think they may soon come to the realization that their guns are not going to be of any use to them in 99.999999% of the scenarios that could possibly befall civilization... 😐

The technology available to the potential despots and megalomaniacs out there goes way beyond whatever a gopher hunter has in his basement.

Many of those gopher hunters in the US have an arsenal of more weapons than is ever reported and the weaponry will not only take out the gopher, but also what is within a hundred feet around him.

Most survivalists aren’t worried as much about an attack from some other country. From that perspective and especially when it comes to the USA, anyone who attacked the country would have to face a gun behind nearly every blade of grass. That would be the positive side of gun ownership.

A majority of survivalists look at catastrophes such as a crash in the economy, or sudden destruction by weather, or a civil war, and some even contemplate the idea of an asteroid hitting earth. All of these scenarios would bring on a collapse in the civilization and the need for food and water and transportation and gas, and at that point the people they will be afraid of……..are their own. Then the only law would be personal survival.

Give me a break!  Ethical investing?  What a joke.

One of the teachers' unions in the U.S. was the majority investor in Cerberus.  They TOLD Cerberus to get rid of this stock.

Hopefully their (the teachers) reasoning was that they were investing in the manufacture of a gun that was used to kill teachers and students, and that was not acceptable.

The little devil on my other shoulder tells me that it may have been that they were dumping the stock before they lost their investment.

It seems that they were not concerned, prior to this shooting, that they were manufacturing assault rifles and profiting from them.

The "hunter" segment of the U.S. gun owning population are now saying that they do not support people owning assault rifles and they do not see why people need such large magazines for hunting.

The "survivalist" segment feel that they need all the fire power they can get.  Many American gun owners feel that if they lose their right to arm themselves, their government will quickly become a dictatorship or the country will be taken over by the military generals.

If Americans need guns, maybe the only guns that should be allowed are single shot guns that can hold one bullet at a time.  Or, maybe the U.S. government could manufacture a two or three shot revolver and issue one to every person on their 21 st. birthday.  That way, everyone will be on an equal footing.  Of course, a law would need to be passed that would not allow anyone to own more than one of these new guns.

What the ____ is happening in the USA!!

NEWTOWN, Conn.—In stockpiling ammunition, smashing his computers and killing his mother as she slept, Adam Lanza undertook considerable preparation before shooting up an elementary school on Friday, a former FBI profiler said.

"He didn't just snap. This takes a lot of planning," said Mary Ellen O'Toole, who worked for 15 years in the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit where she studied psychopaths and helped capture killers.

O'Toole retired in 2009 and has no direct connection to the case.

Investigators had hoped Lanza's computers would shed some light on what caused him to massacre 20 first-graders and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary, a school he once attended. But the 20-year-old reportedly butchered his computer's hard drives with a hammer or screwdriver, according to ABC News.

Still, the FBI's Computer Analysis and Response Team has been working around the clock on the case and could make progress despite the damage.

"The FBI is pretty good, we can pull stuff off anything," O'Toole said.

O'Toole still assists law enforcement and has written a book titled "

Dangerous Instincts." She says the Sandy Hook shootings are worse than any case she has dealt with b...

"I have not seen a case with callousness of this extreme," O'Toole said of Lanza's shooting rampage. "It's off the charts."

Multiple reports have painted Lanza, who lived alone with his divorced mother, as being socially awkward but very intelligent, especially when it came to computers.

O'Toole said the way Lanza carried out his killings suggested a high measure of control, including damaging the computers.

"His computers were very important him. They were a window to his world," O'Toole told Yahoo News. "He didn't want them to survive. He knew that they would give insight into him and didn't want people to have it."

Friends and family of Lanza's mother, 52-year-old Nancy Lanza, have said she dedicated her life to helping her son, who reportedly had Asperger's syndrome or other medical issues.

O'Toole said people with Asperger's, which is a neurological disorder, aren't known to commit such violence and that too much is being made about Lanza's mental health.

"It's time we stop putting out the mental health issue as an excuse that he didn't know what he was doing," she said.

Lanza brought three guns into the school, all owned by his mother. He killed his victims with a high-powered semi-automatic rifle, but he also carried two pistols, one of which he used to take his own life. Police say he sprayed hundreds of bullets inside the school and had considerably more left over to use.

Shooting his mother while she slept and preloading numerous rounds of ammunition into the gun clips signals that Lanza was on a mission, O'Toole said.

"He wanted to accomplish maximum lethality," O'Toole said. "He was not out of touch with reality. I think he put some security measures in place so he wouldn't be stopped."

Which unfortunately meant choosing the most helpless of victims, she added.

"If you pick older people you are going to have some blowback," O'Toole said. "He didn't want people to interfere. When people take security measures like that, you know what you are doing is wrong."

What the ____ is happening in the USA!!

The American psyche is an interesting one. It comes from a history of fighting for the belief in freedom. From the days of the Revolutionary War to Iraq and Afghanistan their lives have been about fighting for that freedom and honour. Even when they lost, even when decades later it was proven that certain wars were ‘invented’, they discard those and look at the dedication and bravery of their soldiers, their people. In the end, every war has been about freedom in the minds of the US people.

To this day they still cherish that freedom and part of it is the Constitution and the Second Amendment,…… ‘’the right to bear arms’’. It is a religion to them, a god given right. To them the gangsters with guns and the nutcases who show up at a theatre or a university or a school are just traitors to the religion, or misguided sick individuals and the victims are ‘unfortunate’. Freedom however, is sacrosanct.

I read about a shooting club outside Newtown and after the shooting at the school there was some discussion about cancelling the gun club activities until the situation at the school was under control and all the people who died were put to rest. Sounds of the shooting at the gun club about 3 miles outside of Newton can be heard in town. However, a majority vote decided that the gun club activities would continue, because that is their right and freedom to do so.

Adam Lanza’s mother may have been part of this gun club where she did target practice and also took Adam to learn to shoot. She was a woman in a well-to-do neighbourhood, reasonably wealthy herself, highly respected and admired by many. She was also a woman with two handguns and an assault style rifle. Ms Lanza was you’re A-typical American and despite the grief of incidents as happened at the school, no one is going to change that American religion any time soon.

Ms Lanza was also a ‘survivalist’ and one of the reasons many people in the US enter groups like that, or do not enter groups but still have their same private beliefs and feelings is because they do not trust government……even their own, past and present.

Their revered writer of the Declaration of Independence said:

"What country can preserve its liberties if its rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them."

--Thomas Jefferson 1787

Is all of this ‘crazy’…..well not necessarily.

A gun is power and also in a sense…. freedom. There’s an old saying ….”God created man…..Colonel Colt made them equal”. There is truth to that because no matter who you are or how weak you are, a gun gives you that equality in survival.

The real question in the USA is how to keep that freedom and at the same time protect others from those who go off the deep end, or the gangsters? Is it doable? I doubt it. You could lessen it by in some way finding and removing from the hands of gangsters as many guns as possible. You could enact laws that make using a gun in the commission of a crime not worth it. You could enact laws for storage so that the wrong people could not easily get their hands on the firearms in a house. But how do you define the ‘wrong people’? Some are easy to see, others are not, because anybody can for whatever reason just….lose it mentally.

Maybe the best that can be done is to try and find these answers but in the end, maybe the loss of life is just going to have to be accepted as part of life. It’s either that, or you will have a revolution in the USA, because it is very difficult, if not impossible to take rights and freedoms away from people who cherish them.

What the ____ is happening in the USA!!

Watching the reaction of various groups to the tragedy is like watching bad "B" movie.

- Americans are rushing to buy assault rifles in record numbers - even though prices have skyrocketed.  The assault rifle used at Sandy Hook is the most sought after.  Not sure why, unless it has been proven to work when you are "hunting".

- the religious types are blaming the parents for kicking God out of our schools. Why would God enter this school to protect these children when he is not welcome there any other time.

- other religious types are blaming God for not being there fro these children

- there is a strong public opinion supporting the arming of teachers.  The suggestion is that three or four volunteer teachers or staff members be trained and armed.  I wonder how much collateral damage there would be during a gun battle between Glock-toting teachers and a mentally challenged individual with an assault rifle.  Then there would be the situation where an armed teacher feels threatened by a student, pulls out the gun and blows him or her away.

‘’the right to bear arms’’

I wonder how the founding fathers would have approached this right if they'd had a crystal ball and could forsee the future.  Times have changed.  Gun ownership has gone from aright to a fanaticism.  One guy on CNN was interviewed at a gun show.  He was looking to add a number of assault rifles to his arsenal before the Govt. took action.  He didn't care about the price.  He needed those rifles.

or the gangsters?

Criminals will always be able to find guns no matter how we restrict them.  I see criminals as being a small part of the problem.  They generally do not shoot someone who does not resist.  They are not the ones doing the mass killings.

could enact laws that make using a gun in the commission of a crime not worth it.

I think that should happen.  It will not stop the mental cases that are responsible for the Sandy Hooks of this world.  It will reduce the number of guns used in the commission of felonies.
