It seems that there are a lot of things that Pitney Bowes didn't anticipate. Honestly, the thing reeks of amateur hour at eBay, as do the stop-gap measures taken to make it more palatable to buyers.

 

The GSP is not a "good fit" for items under $50? Then have a pop-up window advise sellers of this when they are listing cheaper items and select GSP.

 

The country of origin is needed to calculate duty charges, if due? Then have an error message appear and prevent the seller from continuing unless the country of origin is entered.

 

I don't know much about coding but it seems to me that a couple of plugins would have done this. Providing links to the T&C page isn't enough. Most people aren't going to read it, either due to lack of time or because the thing is about as appealing as an afternoon at the dentist getting your teeth drilled.

 

Making the program attractive to sellers isn't enough. Without buyers, sellers don't sell. I wonder how many repeat buyers the GSP is attracting.

Kalvin!  I buy and sell from Canada. Since I am purchasing a lot of second hand patterns, SOME FABRIC, & YARN  the sewing /crochet community does not require priority mail.  Global shipping has been an absolute nightmare. First mistake- Global shipping should not be the DEFAULT.

SECOND-  YOU SHOULD BE INFORMING YOUR LISTING CUSTOMERS that they don't have to use global shipping, just unclick the check mark over -global shipping and you are out- free to use first class mail shipping, for customers /buyers who don't require priority mail,delivery system. Recently I have been told by ebay C/S that a seller can opt out of Global shipping anytime.

Nice theory, just try changing it!!!!  A nightmare.

THIRD; To correct this GROSS MISTAKE simply have 2 check marks for  International  shipping-  box  1) for Global shIpping prority   and  a box  for 2)  FIRST CLASS MAIL SHIPPING.!!!THIS PROBLEM WOULD THAN BE SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!

FORTH;  I ALWAYS- ask the SELLER TO   SHIP  first class mail,  AFTER ACCEPTING  the seller tries to change it and ebay blocks the  transaction?? or the seller has to cancel the  transaction and send buyer a  - revised invoice( now they cannot do that either)  so cancel the transaction and send the buyer a buy it now invoice.

FIFTH;   SINCE NORTH AMERICAN IS A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY- EBAY GLOBAL SHIPPING SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DICTATE TO THE PATRONS /SELLERS   WHAT SHIPPING THEY HAVE TO USE.  to ship to their customers.

Most recently I purchase over 30 patterns from US,  all first class mail.  eg.  1 pattern from california cost $1.80 to me in Canada L0N 1R0 , the same pattern is being charged $ 15.86 by Global shipping.?? Totally absurd. ( I understand a numerous amount  of fees are being added by Global shipping as well, charges that the seller does not see. As a matter of fact, The seller doesn't get to see the charges that Global shipping is charging their customers. When they find out, the are outraged by this horrendous fee!

 

Seems this partnership between pitney bowes and ebay, is a definite conflict of interest.

 

Sellers should be deciding who /how they wish to send items to their customers- not ebay and certainly not Pitney Bowes - Global shipping.

 

Extremely dissatisfied buyer and seller - if  5 years.

Once again I wish to request that Ebay offer a way for buyers to rate and leave feedback for the "service" provided by Pitney Bowes for each and every GSP transaction.

Thanks for posting. Much of what you are suggesting has been added to the list of requests/complaints/suggestions. Thanks for going into such detail -- this helps "build a case" when I compile this stuff for distribution on the eBay side. 

 

For items like the $1.80 pattern, this is perhaps a case where the GSP is not the ideal shipping method. In very general terms, the Program isn't usually a good fit for items priced under $50. See FAQs for this info (and more) -- http://pages.ebay.com/sellerinformation/shipping/globalshippingprogram/update_faqs.html

 

With a GSP transaction, the buyer sees estimated fees on the listing (these are usually very accurate) and then the actual fees on the checkout page. Sellers can always see total fees on the View Order Details page.

I don't know if there are any plans to add a separate feedback option for Pitney Bowes. But if there are specific issues that need addressing, or points that need to be made, here is the GSP specific contact info for PB --

For Pitney Bowes customer service regarding GSP issues, you can email PBISGSPCS@pb.com to reach the GSP Customer Service group. Or you can call 1-866-235-9627, and press 1 to reach the same GSP Customer Service group. 

 

In the meantime the message boards act as the best way for eBay / Pitney Bowes to receive feedback on the Program. So please continue to ask questions, etc., on these boards.

I have been doing a little shopping on Ebay.com and to my surprise I have notice a lot of US sellers are using the Global Shipping program. Went on Buyers central and seen a lot of talk about this. I am not a big fan of this so called program. Anytime there are extra charges, I dont see how this could be a good thing.

My question is; is Ebay and pittney bows getting together to have this introduced in Canada. I hope not. I wonder what incentives ( if any ) they give to the American seller that are using it . This has to hurt there sales.

The GSP T&C for buyers are a pretty serious legal agreement as--among other things--in its current incarnation it grants Pitney Bowes the right to appoint itself importer for the purposes of the transaction and shipment.  There must be some way to convey this agreement in a fairly palatable and easily understood manner.  Maybe a funky Flash animation?  Smiley Very Happy

It is a pretty steep learning curve, though, and at least one Canadian poster has noted that PBI likely misjudged the type of buyers and sellers who would be most likely to use the program.  Some users have taken me to task for not being a "power buyer" like them, but quite honestly, I think my views are just as valid as theirs as occasional eBay users are eBay buyers nonetheless, and probably make up a greater proportion of eBay users than "power buyers".  I just happen to spend quite a bit of time making sure that I'm up to date on changes and developments on the various eBay sites.  I'd be interested in knowing how many other occasional eBay users try to stay abreast of the changes on the sites.

I doubt GSP is coming to Canada ever and even if it did....it's OPTIONAL.

 

There is no real incentive for eBay to bring a GSP type program to Canada because virtually all Canadian sellers already ship internationally while in the US it's a major restraint of growth because so many US Seller are paranoid and feel that they can make all the sales they need just selling within the USA without having to deal with all those thieves which as everybody knows are rampant outside the US and don't exist in Amerika!

 

 

I wonder what incentives ( if any ) they give to the American seller that are using it . This has to hurt there sales.

 

The "incentive" is that US sellers using GSP don't have to deal with the enormous task of taking 10 seconds to complete a customs form and they will (in theory) be protected from scammers (while alienating good buyers).

 

There is nothing inherently wrong with a GSP type program, the problem is that Pitney-Bowes are incompetent and eBay failed miserably to educate sellers on when GSP is appropriate and when it's not.

Keep in mind that the GSP isn't eBay's baby.  I don't believe that Pitney Bowes hasn't been in the online game for as long as eBay and I get the impression it's flailing around trying to figure out this whole "culture of service" thing when it comes to dealing with people who they don't deal with in the flesh but are paying for a service they don't actually initiate.

 

There's a lot that's going to seem bass-ackwards about the Global Shipping Program to those who may be unfamiliar with how imports are dealt with through shipping methods other than the postal system.  The big problem seems to be that this program--while not one-size fits all--might as well be.

 

While I appreciate the rationale for the "$50 maxim," I don't think it's actually particularly useful and that it just confuses through oversimplification.  Yet there are people who paraphrase it as though it's iron-clad and set in concrete. There are other factors that affect an item's suitability for the GSP.  Personally, if I had to come up with a rule of thumb, it would be that items that a seller is comfortable shipping uninsured and untrackable as oversize letters (i.e. small packet / First Class International) are likely not good fits with the GSP.

 

I have no quibbles with the general gist of your idea for ensuring that sellers enter the country of origin in the Item Specifics section of a listing.  What may need to be done is to ensure that sellers use the Item Specifics section for all their listings, GSP or not.  I can see some angst from sellers who may be relisting items only to find that they've somehow found that the GSP has suddenly been added to the listing, although anything that heightens seller awareness of the program can't be a bad thing, I suppose.  😄

Well just had my first experience of PB and the GSP ripoff.  My item hasn't arrived and now I have been stung for extortionate shipping.  

The seller has offer a refund - but I want the shipping back too (unlikely I know)

 

I was completely unaware of this PB rip off until my credit card was ripped off after the transaction, to add insult to injury.

 

Lesson learned, I would be better shopping anywhere but USA

File an item not received claim and you will receive the money for the international portion of the shipping and the import fees from PB or ebay. The seller should reimburse any domestic fees that they have charged and the item cost.

Kalvin and Bennett. If you want more feedback about the GSP program how about contacting Ebay members personally and inviting them to participate in a survey about the GSP? This way you could reach those that are unaware of this forum as well as anyone who is viewing this forum but is reluctant or afraid to post a comment on this forum and you will get a broader picture of what everyone thinks of this program. Just be sure to ask a full assortment of questions that cover all aspects and be sure to provide a place where the participant can add additional comments, questions, etc. I have been invited to participate in 2 surveys on other topics and I responded to both of them. Both surveys were set up to be anonymous and I freely expressed my feelings, opinions and thoughts.

How about a simple Q&A that wouldn't look like a monolithic block of text that goes on for several pages? One that would go the the heart of the matter. Question #1 could go something like this:

 

Q: What is the GSP?

A: The GSP is a program that lets you sell internationally while shipping domestically. It is free to use for sellers but since there are added costs to the buyer, not all items are suited for GSP shipping. We recommend that it be used for items over $50 and items that cannot be mailed by First Class International Mail.

 

And so on. I suppose we could even add some measure of funky flash animation to it 😉

 

But before any of this happens, step #1 would be for eBay to stop enrolling sellers into GSP without their knowledge or consent. Sellers are unlikely to read the details (no matter how they are presented) of a program they don't even know they're using.

File an item not received claim and you will receive the money for the international portion of the shipping and the import fees from PB or ebay. The seller should reimburse any domestic fees that they have charged and the item cost.

 

Assuming the item got to KY safely , PB will refund the entire amount, the seller will keep the purchase money they received, and not be involved in the refund. The only drawbackfor the seller  is that the funds for the sale may be frozen for a while.

 

Do not try to work things out with the seller. The ONLY way to get your full refund is the Paypal INR process.

This is exactly why this program is such a colossal mess. 

 

Bennett, thanks for your reply I have no need to contact anyone at PB because I will not use this program, but I was thinking more in terms of those thousands and thousands of buyers who have bought items through the GSP and are not aware of these feedback forums .

 

eBay claims that it is  predicated on a feedback and rating system to ensure transparency and to build trust and reputation for the site.

 

I find it disingenuous that Canadian sellers are being rated and face serious consequences for shipping times and shipping costs (just check out the weekly chat of March 12th and see the handicaps faced by Canadian sellers)  .... and yet when it comes to PBI's Global Shipping Program, it has been  given a free ticket in this regard, despite the fact that so many buyers report dismal shipping times, inaccurate tracking,  and exorbitant shipping costs.

 

This thread has pages and pages of buyer complaints.

 

I think it is pretty clear what eBay thinks of its Canadian market. 

 

And that would be not a whole lot.

Here is why Ebay should eliminate the GSP

 

- Brokerage Fees that are sometimes higher then the product its self ,  a lot of Buyers will not buy from US or other Over seas  Sellers that us USP  DHL or FedEx  . because they add high Brokerage fees .  and I as a buyer/Seller  Want  the cheapest Rate on I can get on shipping

 

- Taxes are added to non taxable Items , USPS is famous for doing this a shoe that is size 24.5 or less is considered to be a Childrens size , in Canada  yet USP  FedEx and GSP classify them as adult boots or shoes .    The same happens with medical suppies such as adult diapers Restraints and Special needs Clothing  as they are all non taxable in Canada yet taxes are added

 

-GSP also dose not allow for you to send items standard letter or large letter post ,  there by over charging for shipping  same with UPS FedEx and so on

 

- GSP Like FedEx and USP's  Brokerage charge is based on the Value of the item  so your getting screwed .  and it doesn't allow the seller the option to ship via a cheaper shipping method 

 

- As a seller All these fees the GSP incurs increase the finel cost of the item to the buyer , there for increasing the amount ebay gets on the finel value  .

 

 

The GSP is just as bad if not worse then ebays brainless idea of including the cost of shipping in their cut of what an item sells for . 

 

If ebay wants to know why they are loosing money and sellers are now selling on other sites such as Kijiji  and ioffer , well you know why .

 

 

I refuse to use The GSP and if ebay makes so I gotta use it I will find a way around it even if it means breaking  international laws .

To ebay from what I understand is that unless the seller is a Linced seller businessness owner in their country , then all items no matter what the price are non taxable , even says so under international law .

So the GSP charging taxes in illegal , anyone can sell their items at a yard sale or Flea market or on the street and not be obligated by law to charge taxes . Ebay is just an online yard sell . So Its unfair for the buyer to be forced to pay taxes . I know every trick in the book on how to buy products and not pay not pay taxes or charge taxes .

Ya till you get a message saying your item has been removed from international view for no legitimate reasons

 

And when the cost of shipping your item alone is more then what your selling the item for , with out the GSP .

 

Try Selling the products I sell to international buyers with the GSP  and you will go out of business very fast . and never make a profit Because ebays final value fees will eat them all up due to the shipping

 

I don't use the GSP and wont us it as the cost to ship the Diapers I sell would cost my buyers 30% more money  .  after selling the Diapers I would Owe ebay more money then what I am selling the item for . 

 

So I hardly believe the GSP is increasing your business , if you do what I do you make more money not using the GSP .

 

To be honest your Cost just went up using GSP .
