Do NOT ENROLL in eBay International Program THEY HIDE COSTS

26 year seller on ebay. Stupidity without researching fees, I enrolled in eBay International Shipping program. I should have known better. Always read fine print. Except eBAY DOES NOT PUT FEES AND COSTS involved in its eBay international shipping program, ANYWHERE.

IT A GUESSING GAME. Espically when it come to eBay Terms of service. eBay HIDES all related fees and costs to this international shipping service.

Anyway I sold two label pins, two different sellers. Total sale less than $25cdn and Ship them same day to eBay International selling hub, using CPC. They added tarrifs, assumed they applied correct HS codes, send package via DHL on to the USA customers

Now I am going to be billed for shipping to ebay hub in Canada, plus tarrif fees etc. My Net lost will include inventory, listing costs, time management, using two shippings services + costs, etc.

My Advise, Unless you selling anything over three figures, run from eBay International Shipping program. eBay are professional at hiding fees and costs related to selling.

I'm looking at the packing slip from a sale yesterday.

Subtotal  (purchase price)    C $149.99

Shipping                                       C$43.86

GST(eBay collected)               C$19.39

Order total**                                 C$213.24

**Order total includes eBay-collected sales tax ..... remits to tax authorities.... applicable state law.

According to my records, the buyer paid $24.72 to me for calculated shipping from Victoria to ON.

1.) It is my understanding that the rest of the "shipping " charge is the eIS shipping + tariff/duty/import fees

2.) The buyer pays their state sales tax. But eBay calls it GST, which is a Canadian term not used in the USA, and the Canadian GST would not be applicable to an exported sale.

3.) Are we now being charged fees on state sales taxes or not? We are when we ship outside the eIS, so I would assume that we are.

4.) It is not possible for the programming to tell the seller the exact cost of shipping (or of sales taxes) until the buyer purchases and their location established. And never has been, which is why we have Calculated Shipping in the first place.

Were any of these points covered in the seminar last week?
Are these new questions, devon@ebay ?

You are definitely correct. The final packing slip should be much clearer. Even a receipt from 7-11 is more transparent.

If you compare it to sending an invoice (sellers have to do from time to time when revised shipping or a discount is in play and a customer asks for 1...saves refunding after the fact) the invoice does NOT mirror the packslip exactly. Are all sellers including a PS in the box for buyers records? Highly recommended. Especially with ebay and customs being involved in multiple processes.

For a Canadian invoice to buyer it "currently" shows and includes the tax rate based on the province it is going to with split. The packing slip for tax shows it as  line item(s)  amount without % (with notation ebay collected).  Unsure for US format because I haven't viewed or sent one in years. They have made sooo many modifications over the last 25 years  I can no longer remember seeing a physically correct standard displaying invoice for anything eBay related.

In checking a purchase invoice I made in 2024 from a Canadian (ab) seller displays as follows.  12.00 for item. 2.00 for letter mail. Total 14.70. Tax wasn't even noted as a line item. So it has definitely been revised.

For your example it should show the sales tax collected from buyer based on their state an applicable tax rate with %. IF there is something like a recycling tax that should be shown also as secondary line item with applicable %. (From a personal experience it does not.)  Important to note and realize tax rates can differ based on the zip code in a state. They also should be showing duty rate that was charged to the buyer. Does buyer even get an itemized charge of eis customs fees?  Otherwise very challenging for a buyer to dispute.

Basically eIS is a Canadian Freight Forwarder. (Middleperson for transaction).  For outside of USA shipments are they routing orders thru/via the USA or are they going directly to the foreign country bypassing the USA? Are they collecting tax(s) based on destination state or on fact item is now going to an Ontario address? Which tax total or are Canadian sellers being charged fees against the revised total amount?

And throwing it out there again. The Canadian portion with calculated shipping to hub or anywhere in Canada has prov. tax already built in as per example below. Why is  ebay charging tax again on the item price and shipping total?

Based on @reallynicestamps  example, the tax appears to be US state % vs  Ontario.

When you view your FVF's for eIS transactions how transparent is the explanation as to what you were charged displayed? Or is it just as fuzzy? Looking forward to follow up to your post from eBay.

Something there does not make sense.

You say " I am going to be billed for shipping to ebay hub in Canada, plus tarrif fees etc" ...Yes, one gets billed the shipping cost to the hub in Misssissauga (plus the applicable listing fee)...and that's it. Tariffs, fees, duty, taxes...That's the buyer's responsibility, and they are charged by eBay directly (I'm assuming that's what you are calling "hidden fees", as they are not shown to the seller).

As seller you are on the hook for shipping to the hub (assuming you used eBay shipping).

The other costs of eIS are billed to the buyer.

eBay International Shipping has been a thing on the US site for over two years.  Word gets out quickly on the Community Boards and Reddit; if extra charges were a thing with eIS, we'd have heard about it some time ago.

I think that either something was either handled improperly with your shipment (Did it go to Mississauga?) or you're misunderstanding the documentation you've received about your item.  For all intents and purposes, from your end a sale made with eIS should look like a sale you made to a buyer with a Canadian address.

What do your fee summaries state about these sales?  Can you share a screen shot with the information you received about the charges you're mentioning and where it states that you're paying them?

It's more marketing fluff than "fine print," but the FAQs on eIS Canada state pretty clearly:

  • When your buyer selects eBay International Shipping, they will see a calculated shipping cost to be paid at checkout. This includes whatever domestic shipping rate you charge for your items. Sellers are paid out based on that domestic rate, and are simply responsible for shipping to the domestic eIS hub in Mississauga.
  • Once you get your item successfully to our Canadian hub, eBay will handle the customs process. Just make sure your Country of origin and other product information is accurate, and we’ll take care of the rest. If any import fees apply to your item, your buyer will have the opportunity to pay those fees upfront at checkout

Since you offer free domestic shipping, you pay for shipping to the hub out of the item cost, just as you would with a regular domestic sale.

You are anticipating charges that won't occur...

You are only going to be charged the CPC label for shipping to the hub.

The buyer pays the duties/import at checkout.

The buyer pays for the DHL second shipping step.

Click on an order and view more details (bottom of right column), and then 'view' on details column again for the item transaction.  Then look at the fees based on breakdown.  Click the amounts to expand.

Fees should be based on the item price and domestic shipping collected from buyer for EIS order.  The 0.4% (for US) fee is also removed.  This will be less or more than a regular international order depending on several factors.

If there was a channel to delete this post I would. I may be miscontrued.  My trust with ebay is none. As of yet, I have not been billed, any extra shipping cost or  tarrif fees on those two items I sold to my American customers. BUT. Here my fear, since several of you message me, telling me I won't be charged, Only the customer will be charged for tarrif fees, and shipping from their hub. I will have to accept I am wrong about the EIS program. However, fool me once, I have yet to get my final fees, costs and shipping charges from this sale. so forgive me if I lost trust and wary of EIS. I hope you are all right, that the seller will not be billed for the extra charges. We shall see.
