Shipping protocol issue

Hi folks - A seller just won 2 listings of mine.  I've have the shipping protocal set up to be $2.95 for the first item and .95 cents for each additional.  However, eBay invoiced it as 2 x $2.95.  I went to double check my shipping protocol and it definitely has the lower combine shipping at 95 cents.

Any ideas for future listings.  (I'll refund the extra shipping this particular seller was charged, but don't want to have to do this every time).

Thanks!

... Happy Thanksgiving Smiley Happy

Re: Shipping protocol issue

I don't see any combined shipping rules set up on either of your two current listings.....

Re: Shipping protocol issue

It's so darned frustrating - because the .95 cent additional rate for combined shipping is definitely saved and part of the shipping protocol.

Thanks for looking.  I really don't know what else to do.

Re: Shipping protocol issue

Here's what my protocol looks like:

Currency: US$ (U.S. dollars) Domestic shipping

  • Flat: same cost to all buyers
  • Services
    • Standard Shipping (1 to 10 business days) - $ 2.95 ; Each additional : $ 0.95
  • Handling time : 2 business days

International shipping

  • Flat: same cost to all buyers
  • Ship to : United States ; Service : Canada Post Light Packet USA - $ 2.95 ; Each additional : $ 0.95

Re: Shipping protocol issue

Well it's not showing on your listings either on .ca or .com so something is not set correctly.

I don't combined shipping rules much so I can't help you.

Re: Shipping protocol issue

It is a known issue to Ebay and they don't care. They get to make more on shipping fees, if buyer upset, will hit your stars, eventually it will get you kicked off or Ebay will make lots of nickel and dime stuff off you. Many people have phoned Ebay and nothing gets done. It is also happening on the .com site.

That looks like information from your listings which applies when someone buys more than 1 item from the same listing. If you want to use combined shipping discounts for two or more different listings you have to set that up under Account - Site preferences - Shipping preferences

Re: Shipping protocol issue

Thanks PJ.  However the piece of info I had copied & pasted in my previous post is not from my listings page.

It comes from the settings I have set up in the following:

 > My eBay > My Account > Preferences > Combined Payments and Shipping Discounts

I only sell one item per listing, so your info around that doesn't apply.

Oh well, I'll just ask buyers to contact me for an invoice so I can add the combined shipping discount manually.

Thanks for your responses everyone.

"Oh well, I'll just ask buyers to contact me for an invoice so I can add the combined shipping discount manually."

If I may be candid, that is not good enough.

PJ gave you the correct information.  You need to set up your shipping preferences to allow lower charges for additional items.  Easy to do and satisfying for buyers.

The worst you can do is having a buyer purchase two items, pay for them immediately, then realise he overpaid for shipping and is mad at you!

If it worth doing it is worth doing it right.

By the way, it is not an easy subject to master and make take some time trying different solutions before you get it right.

Re: Shipping protocol issue

Thanks Pierre,

However, as you can see in my response to PJ -- I have already set my shipping protocol in:

 > My eBay > My Account > Preferences > Combined Payments and Shipping Discounts

There is NO other place on the eBay site to apply additional shipping information.

The link you provided  just tells folks go to go to the same place that I have already set my shipping protocols as indicated above!

Re: Shipping protocol issue

Here is the problem - I checked a listing and see one shipping price $2.95, nothing if the buyer purchases a second item.

Please read the link I provided earlier carefully.  Pay special attention to:

Creating flat shipping rules

Flat shipping rules let you offer discounts to buyers who purchase more than one of your items. You can charge for shipping the item with the highest shipping cost, and then add an additional lower cost for each additional item that they purchase from you. You can also subtract shipping costs for each additional item purchased, or offer free shipping on additional items. If you choose to subtract an amount you can choose to subtract a fixed dollar amount or a percentage of the shipping cost.

Example 1: If a buyer purchases 3 items from you, you can have a rule that the buyer is charged the shipping amount for the item with the highest shipping cost, plus an additional $1 for each additional item purchased.

Example 2: If a buyer purchases 3 items from you, you can have a rule that the buyer is charged the shipping amount for the item with the highest shipping cost, and then subtract $1 from that cost for each additional item purchased.

Re: Shipping protocol issue

Thanks again Pierre.

I have ALREADY set the shipping protocol for additional items, under FLAT RATE SHIPPING RULES.  It clearly shows .95 cents for each additional item.

I have saved and re-saved this shipping configuration.  It shows up accurately under my protocol, but doesn't show up in the listing.

I appreciate your input.  I need to go to work now, but will check back later.

Thanks again.

Re: Shipping protocol issue

It does not show into the listing because the listinmg was created PRIOR to you changing the preferences.

If you list a new item today and tick the boxes

X Apply my flat shipping rule with profile name:

X Apply my promotional shipping rule

you should see it apply properly.

As stated earlier, there is a lot of trial and error here.  It took me quite a while to get it right, many years ago.

If I recall well, I had to set up identical preferences on eBay.ca and eBay.com

Re: Shipping protocol issue

Pierre and OP - I could be wrong, but I believe you can revise existing listings to capture the new information that you have input into shipping discounts/promotional rules.

I actually had to do this recently when I was reviewing some of my listings for other reasons and saw that the discounts weren't showing up.  On revising the listings, I noticed that the box marked "apply my promotional shipping rule" was not checked off, as Pierre mentions.  I checked it on each of the listings while editing them, and that seemed to have done the trick.  You do have to look for the box carefully -- it's underneath each of the flat rate shipping sections on the listing form (or edit listing form).  I'm not sure whether you can use "bulk edit" to do this, as I haven't tried.

I'm not sure what an earlier poster was referring to by a "known issue" vis-a-vis promotional shipping/shipping discounts not appearing.  I would think that revising listings as noted above should pick up the new shipping rules a seller has set.

It looks like the .95 for second item is set up now. How did you fix it?

Re: Shipping protocol issue

Thanks Pierre and everyone!! 🙂

I was able to go into the existing listings and activate my shipping protocol.  Pierre was correct.  Even though I had the correct shipping protocol, it wasn't linked to my 2 listings because I had redone the protocol after I created the listings.

Yay!!! Woman Very Happy

Re: Shipping protocol issue

It sounds like the OP must have revised her existing listings (i.e. checked off the "apply my promotional shipping rule" box in each).

Re: Shipping protocol issue

Yes, Rose, that's what I did.  I went into each listing and applied the updated shipping rule.
