Customer asking me to do something I don't think is right

Just had a potential customer who has bid on a few of my items, ask if I would let her husband come over and pay for the items even though there is over 3 days left on the auctions.(her husband is in my town on business)  She has 0 feedback, I'm wondering if I have a potential problem.  I replied that there was no way she could know what the auctions would go for or that she would win them.

ask if I would let her husband come over and pay for the items

Are you sure they meant now/today and not when they end?

Maybe the question "can I send my husband to pick these up" was really "can I send my husband to pick these up after they end".

If they really want you to end early and sell to them, you can, it's completely eBay legal, in fact if you end the listing once it has bids on it eBay will charge their fee regardless if you get paid or not.

Generally speaking it's not a good idea to end a listing early, I usually respond "Thanks for the offer, to be fair to all interested buyers I will let this run to the end".

Re: Customer asking me to do something I don't think is right

"Would you entertain the idea of having my husband stop by tonight or tomorrow to pick up and pay for a bunch of what you have listed?" are her exact words.  I did not know it was legal ebay to end an auction early.  I agree with you that it doesn't seem like a good idea. Thank you for the response.

Re: Customer asking me to do something I don't think is right

Looks like you have multiples of your items and when they sell it's usually at the opening bid.

In that case you have some choices.......

- say yes, ask them what items they want, make up a special BIN listing for them and have them purchase that (use local pick-up for the shipping option). You or they would need to cancel the current bids they have.

- end the listings early and "sell to current high bidder"

- Tell them they have to wait to the end

All of the above are eBay legal

- take the entire deal off eBay, cancel the existing bids and have the husband come by with a shopping bag and a pile of cash.

This option is NOT eBay legal!!! (I repeat for the moderators this option is NOT eBay legal!!!!!!!).

Personally I don't mind local pick-up and I offer it in all my listings. That said I DO NOT offer "local shopping", you can come and pick up something you have already bought but you can't come and dig around in my inventory, I am NOT a retail storefront, browsers are not welcome in my home (I don't even let friends rummage through my stuff).

Re: Customer asking me to do something I don't think is right

I do allow local pickup, and have had it done once before.  I am selling off my paper crafting stuff, so I don't really have multiples just a lot of stuff :), I realize it is convenient for her with her husband in town to save on shipping and get the stuff now, but I put up the auctions knowing they would last for 7 days and I think its only fair to let that play out.  I have told her so, thank you for your help.

Re: Customer asking me to do something I don't think is right

People misunderstand how inconvenient pickup actually is. For both buyer and seller.

At the Ontario minimum wage of 17 cents a minute, how much labour is the buyer expending in picking up? Then there is the cost of transportation to and from the seller's location. And time spent cooridinating a mutually convenient time.

I'm lucky because DH allows my customers to pick up at his shop, which allows them to choose their own timing within store hours. But there is no free parking except on Saturdays in downtown Ottawa. And we are a whole two blocks off the Transitway. Woman LOL

Still, for the OP, the fact that the auction is still running is the best reason for a polite refusal. Most bids come in at the very last minute and she could be losing money by agreeing.

Re: Customer asking me to do something I don't think is right

I agree with femmefan.   Having people pick up a products can be very time consuming.  Once they get to your home they want to see what else you have and/or they want to chat for a 1/2 hour or longer.  After you rummage through your stock they end up buying the thing they wanted in the first place.  Which is pretty much what recped said about not offering "local shopping".

Also I don't want strange men showing up at my door.

I've never allowed requests for customers to pick up items.  You don't know who is going to show up at your door or if they will show up when they say they will come.

I always let them know all orders are sent by mail, our business operates online only and we do not have a showroom.  Also due to liability issues it's not a good idea as we have 4 big dogs that will meet them at the door (true).

Re: Customer asking me to do something I don't think is right

I do pick-ups anytime somebody asks.......

Consider I'm in the big smoke, many people have metro passes and I'm 5 minutes from the Subway. Pretty easy to stop by and save a few Dollars especially given that it costs $7 to ship a record  to a location that might be only a ten minute drive or a 20 minute subway ride away.

Although I don't let anyone browse my inventory I do enjoy the opportunity to "interrogate" the eBay "experience" from a buyer's perspective.

Avoiding PayPal fees is a nice albeit modest perk and I've found that buyers who pick-up are more than likely going to become repeat customers.

All good points, but I have to say that dog in your ID picture looks too cute and friendly to be any problem (but then being a "dog person", 4 big dogs greeting me at someone's door would OK by me!) Woman Very Happy

Fortunately, being out in the countryside, I've never felt any reason to offer local pick-up.
