The True North strong and *free* !

Is there any rational explanation why is Quebec trying to ban headscarfs ?

What's next? Julia uses make up and frocks instead of the severe uniforms which the Party issued, saying that within this room at least she meant to be a woman and not a Party comrade....  http://www.online-literature.com/orwell/1984/13/

The Parti Quebecois - with a minority government - is attempting to attract some votes for the next election.

Any "rational" reason? Well I don't know, except that bigotry and hate often finds one.

Hopefully, you are smart enough to make a distinction between a minority political party (Parti Quebecois) and the population of Quebec.

Yah minority, slight half of the voting population, and many more small minds ripe for the  picking,as you state "a pq campaign tactic"

Living in quebec most of my life and having been trashed because I was born native. I share the scarved heads sentiments.

Re: The True North strong and *free* !

Here's a link to some of the bans already in effect in Europe.

Surprisingly, as of this writing (in 2010) there was a ban on veils in public buildings even in Turkey(!).

The rationale is pretty vague.

Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau the only federal leader to speak out on this issue.

Trudeau very quickly carving a reputation for transparency, honesty and forthrightness. Possibly not the best move for a politician but it may be what is needed in Canada.

Toronto Sun: Parti Quebecois is crafting legislation that would take away the right of citizens to wear religious signs and symbols such as visible crosses, yarmulkes and hijabs in public institutions such as hospitals, schools and daycares. http://www.torontosun.com/2013/08/21/quebecs-proposed-ban-of-religious-symbols-in-public-buildings-provokes-defiant-reaction

CBC: PQ government is set to prevent employees in public institutions like schools and hospitals from wearing religious symbols such as turbans, niqabs, kippas, hijabs and highly visible crucifixes. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2013/08/20/pol-cp-quebec-identity.html

Big difference.

As a public servant, and a committed Christian, if this ban comes in, I'm buying and wearing a hijab. Got this one on my Watch List.

Re: The True North strong and *free* !

I actually might agree with CBC version of this proposition, that would require government and their employees to remain secular or leave government service if that is unacceptable. There is a clear choice.

My beef was with Toronto Sun interpretation of this proposal, which would affect everyone receiving any government service. People usually don't have lot of choices when they are applying for passport, renewing driver's license or driving wife in labor to hospital.

It is interesting that in order to preserve Quebec culture that the Quebec government has chosen to destroy the culture of other people within it's jurisdiction.
